"I had squirrels scurrying around in my attic crawl space for months. I tried putting in mothballs, flashing lights, banging on the walls, throwing socks filled with fox-urine-scented animal repellent granules -- nothing worked to deter those squirrels from coming back and nesting in my attic. Finally I gave up on my home remedies and called three professional animal control companies to give me estimates on fixing the problem. The discrepancy in price was jaw-dropping, for basically the same solution. One company wanted $1000, one wanted $1300 and Alco wanted $500. Two great guys, Angel and Don, came and went up a ladder to inspect the hole in corner of the roof where I had seen the squirrels coming and going. They identified two other potential problem areas in other parts of the roof. They put in a one-way wire tunnel, and put two sizes of wire mesh around the area of the entry hole. Within less than a day the squirrels had left the attic. I saw them attempting to return, but they could not. In a few days, the guys came back, removed the tunnel and sealed up the hole with wire mesh. The underscored how important it was for me to get a roofer to replace the wood and shingles that the squirrels had chewed through, in order to prevent rainwater and snow melt from getting inside the walls of my house. They were knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to deal with throughout the process, and gave a one-year guarantee. The more expensive companies offered exactly the same service, but didn't bring a ladder to examine the problem. If squirrels or other critters ever get back in, I will definitely call Alco again. We were totally satisfied with their job."

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

The type and amount of damage pests can cause to your home depends on the type of pest. Some pests, like rodents, often chew through wiring and can cause extensive damage to electrical systems, HVAC systems, walls, and insulation. Additionally, the pest’s waste presents a potential health hazard if it contaminates food or water. Other pests, such as termites, chew through floors, walls, and furniture, causing thousands of dollars in damage and making for costly repairs.

Ask your friends and family for recommendations for exterminators. You can also browse online for reputable ant control companies in your area—make sure they have glowing reviews and the proper licenses and permits.

Give them a call, and they can take a look at your infestation, determine the type of ant they’re dealing with, and give you a cost estimate. Then, you can compare quotes and choose the pro that’s right for you.

Some plants that are toxic to animals or insects are also toxic to people. Daffodils, for example, are considered poisonous to humans (although they are rarely fatal). Most of the other plants listed above, however, are safe (and delicious!) for humans to eat, including basil, rosemary, and lemongrass.

Roaches multiply quickly, which is why an infestation can spread so fast. Female American cockroaches lay about 12 eggs in each egg case, called an ootheca. They can lay six to 14 ootheca during their short lifespan. German cockroaches lay four to five ootheca in their lifetime, with each carrying 20 to 40 eggs. Many roaches can have 100 to over 200 offspring during their lifespan.

Most bugs that get into and reside inside our homes are harmless. However, you should address the presence of harmful ones, such as bed bugs, roaches, or termites, that can harm you and your home. Additionally, if you notice a significant increase in bug sightings of any kind, it's a good time to perform a home inspection, looking for water or structural damage that could be inviting them in.
