"I had Dan stop by my mother inlaw's house to evaluate an existing roof that was leaking water. He took me up on the roof and pointed out areas where there was poor workmanship and recommended a new roof. The skylights were in the area of the leak so decided to replace them also. Dan's crew arrived on time with their supervisor Mike. Glad I decided to replace the roof. Once they removed the old roofs there was signs of rotten wood that you couldn't even see. The group of guys Dan has working for him are great. Mike explained every step that needed to be done and kept the guys moving all day. They were able to complete to whole job in one day and it looks great. Guys did a great job cleaning up, if I didn't know work was done I never would be tell from looking around the house. Every bit of the old roof and nails were cleaned up. Dan stopped by near the end of the day just check in and make sure I was happy. It was one of the best experiences I have had with hiring someone to do work. I would use them again and gladly recommend them. Already plan on using them for gutter guards in the near future."

"I feel very fortunate to have found the listing for Heartland Village Handyman Services on Angie's List. Harvey and his team helped me out of a jam and did great work for me, jumping into action with barely a day's notice. They were punctual, professional, neat and accommodating. The service contracted for was completed in a timely fashion as well. My deck looks great and is ready for company I have coming over soon. I would recommend Heartland Village Handyman Services to family and friends."

"We used A1 Loyalty Construction to fix our siding on one side of our house. Cesar and his team were amazing! Explained every step, worked with us while we replaced windows on that side also and were very professional and attentive. They did a great job taking down our siding and putting everything back up, even power washed that side! Definitely calling them up again once we are ready to do other work along with masonry work. "Manny and his crew did our home's siding (removal and replacement), new gutters, overhang, front and side door trim and door, repaired our deck, built us wooden stairs and established a drainage pipe under our lawn to catch our gutter water and sump pump water, plus a few other odd jobs and we are happy with every single one of them! He gave our house a total facelift and listened to all of our concerns as well as gave advice for how to make things look better, without overcharging us. It was a fair price for work well done, the crew was courteous and hardworking, and they cleaned up after themselves. We would definitely recommend MJA to anyone considering inside or outside renovation or repairs; they're honest and give a fair price and will go through things step by step with you which nearly impossible to find and a real treasure once you do."

Siding FAQs, answered by experts

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Regularly clean with mild detergent, inspect for cracks, and replace damaged sections as needed.

You should plan to stain or refinish your home's cedar siding every three to seven years to maintain its appearance and provide maximum protection, though some estimates suggest a range of four to six years. The exact frequency depends on several factors, including your local climate, exposure to severe weather like direct sunlight, rain, and wind, the quality of the initial stain application, the type of stain used, and the overall condition and quality of the wood.

For homes in harsh climates with high humidity and significant sun exposure, you should plan on staining as often as every three years, while those in milder locations may only need to do so every seven years. For the longest-lasting protection in particularly harsh climates, consider using an opaque stain.

If you are looking for a lower-maintenance alternative, you might consider vinyl or aluminum siding. While the initial installation cost can be higher, they do not require as much upkeep and can offer more value over time, especially in areas with excessive rainfall or high humidity.

Hail as small as 3/4 inch (about the size of a penny) can cause damage to your siding. When hail reaches 1 inch in size, you can expect to see more cracks, chips, and holes, and hail that’s 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 inches around will cause significant damage. If you see hail that’s 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches or more in size, the damage is likely to be extensive and possibly even dangerous.

Yes, you can mount shutters to vinyl siding. Depending on the weight and material of choice, you may need more fasteners or larger fasteners to secure the shutters onto the vinyl surface. It’s also important to locate studs or drill into the window frame when installing heavier shutters to best hold the weight of the shutters if you opt for composite or wood shutters.
