"This company lacks communication. Not only does it lack, but they also tried very hard not to return your phone calls. Every contractor they sent my way was horrible. The roofers urinated all over my yard, throwing debris all over my landscaping. These guys were not legate contractors; they were people you pick up off the street. The electrician drilled a hole into the house hitting wires and causing my power to go out in various locations. He didn't have enough integrity to tell anyone. It’s been about 6 months and no power is being generated from our panels. Yet I am being billed on top of our high electrical bill. Come to find out our utility company denied the project from the start and has been trying to reach someone at the company and they are not returning his calls. We have been reaching out as well, no one knows anything. The utility company states that we can’t even have 28 panels on our roof, which are already installed and being paid for. PECO provided their solutions to get us up and running. Suntuity is also avoiding them too. So clearly this problem is not going away soon. Clear to see Suntuity ignored the utility companies’ denial of our project and went ahead and installed this so they could start getting paid. If this continues to be avoided, we will have to contact a lawyer, I will not pay for a system that was never approved from the utility company, that has not passed final inspection with the township and will not function because Suntuity did not do their due diligence."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

You can start narrowing your search for a reputable solar company by finding local, regional, and national companies that service your area and maintain positive reviews online. You should also check the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) website to see if the company has complaints filed against them. Next, contact the remaining candidates and ask about installation timelines, warranty coverage, and financing options. Choose a company that offers a labor warranty that lasts at least 10 years and prioritizes cash purchases and solar loans.

The average-sized home in the U.S.—around 2,500 square feet—will require between 15 and 34 solar panels to power the whole home. The specific number, however, will have less to do with home size and more to do with how much energy you use each year and the amount of sunlight in your region.

The best way to save money on solar panels is to take advantage of federal and state solar incentives. For example, the solar investment tax credit (ITC) offered by the federal government can save 30% of your total—if you can take the entire credit, which is based on income taxes owed—or an average of around $9,000. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) for state and local incentives that could save you even more.

Yes, you should tell your home insurance company about your solar panels. Even if you believe they’re covered by your existing policy, installing a solar panel system is a significant change to your home. This can affect coverage and premiums. By discussing your new solar panel installation with your insurance provider, you can be sure you have enough coverage and that the policy completely covers the panels against damage.

As long as your solar panels are properly installed without damage to your roof, they will not shorten the roof’s life span. Solar panels can act as a cover or barrier to your roof and help block external elements, such as debris, heat, and UV rays. Reduced exposure to the weather can extend your roof’s life.
