"As a single, female homeowner I rely heavily on customer reviews when it comes to selecting contractors for home repairs. Therefore, I take submitting my reviews seriously and am always completely candid. With that said, I am submitting this review to express my satisfaction with the chimney cleaning and chimney liner replacement performed by Daren of Gallo's Chimney Sweep. Daren (and his brother-in-law, whose name escapes me) were both extremely professional and personable. Daren provided pictures of my chimney, which clearly showed I had a problem. He patiently explained in detail (including the required materials) what should be done to rectify the problem. There were no 'hard sale tactics' nor any pressure to sign a contract. After making a few calls and conducting my own research on the Internet I discovered his quote was very reasonable. We agreed on a date/time and he arrived as scheduled. They reviewed completed stages with me throughout the project to make sure I understood what they were doing and why. Once the job was complete, they cleaned up all the debris. Gallo’s Chimney Sweep checked all the boxes: Prompt, Professional, Dependable, Lifetime Guarantee, Reasonable Pricing, and Immaculate Clean-up. I highly recommend Gallo's for your chimney repairs and maintenance."

"5 Star Renovations Installed lieder pipe (i.e., downspout) for our Sun Room so that water can exit from the roof of our sunroom via a duct that extends through a hole in the edge of our deck down and across the grounds below to the outside. They Sealed with Silicon two windows of the Sun Room (where there was moss collecting) to block possible water deposits entering the window area. They also Power Washed the entire Sunroom, our front patio, and the steps leading to the patio. They replaced 3 chimney chase covers on top of our roof, reinforced the chimney with 2x11 wood inside, Installied new plywood on the Tap, removed rotting wood siding around the chimney, installied new wood siding , and cleaned all the debris. They did the jobs efficiently and expeditiously. They kept us apprised of what they were doing every step of the way and were polite and courteous. I recommend them highly!"

Fireplaces FAQs, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

Gas-burning fireplaces need servicing to keep them in proper working order. You should call a fireplace pro to inspect and clean your gas-burning fireplace at least once per year or whenever problems arise. Servicing your gas-burning fireplace will help it function properly while also extending its lifespan. It’ll also ensure that your fireplace is operating safely.

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

They’re both types of wood-burning fireplaces, but a wood fireplace is built directly into a wall and attached to a chimney. A built-in wood fireplace often has an open hearth, although some models have an enclosed hearth. On the other hand, a wood-burning fireplace insert is a self-contained box that slides into an existing fireplace opening.

A quality pellet stove that receives proper maintenance can last between 15 and 20 years, while most will last at least 10 years. The exact lifespan depends on factors like frequency of use and how well the stove is cared for. Proper maintenance—such as periodically cleaning the vents, vacuuming the ash pan, and refreshing the pellets as needed—can significantly extend its life, making it a worthwhile long-term investment.
