"We went with Matt and team for our kitchen remodel and the process could not have been smoother. The project was completed to our standards, on time, and within budget which is really all you can ask for from a contractor. While Matt did not give us the cheapest quote, we found the pricing fair and even asked him to complete some additional projects, like replacing our front door. Matt was professional and easy to work with and told us exactly what needed to be purchased and when which helped keep everyone on track. We would highly recommend Matt and team and plan on using them for additional projects in the future."

"From the initial phone call to the completion of the job Quality 1st provided top notch professional service. A couple points which makes this easy to write. Communication is key whether in person or via telephone and Q1 was exceptional in this regard at every point. Telephone conversations with customer services was pleasant and cordial, never rushed or snotty. Paul our salesman was here for quite a while answering questions and assessing our needs in the basement. Of only was he on time for our appointment he was about 10 minutes early too. The cost of this project was a good chunk of change for us but after too many times of shop-vac’ing water we knew it was time to bite the bullet and move forward with making life a little easier and not have the issue of when will we get water in the basement again hanging over our heads. I was impressed that Quality 1st uses their own products and has their own R&D facilities. As for the installation, enough cannot be said for the crew that was here. I got the call at 9am they would be here in 20 minutes and at 9:20 they were backing in my driveway. I met the foreman Mario and his 2 helpers. We went into the basement and they looked around and asked if I had any questions. We had almost everything out of the basement and what was left they covered in plastic. By 9:50am they were running the jackhammers. We have a 1,500 sqft ranch and these guys worked all day, they didn’t stop and worked their tails off. I can’t remember exactly when the jackhammer stopped but by 2 pm the channel was dug out and they were beginning to lay out for the channel that carries the water to the sump. About 4pm Kyle showed up to assess the job and see if I had any questions or concerns. We spoke about the job and we went downstairs to see the progress. He stayed on site for about 45 minutes after making sure I was comfortable with how the job was going. By 5:15 or so the job was completely finished. Before they left Mario went over everything regarding the sump system. As far as cleanup, this is a dusty job. Concrete dust is ultra fine and they did a fantastic job of not only sweeping but they also dusted off areas which were not covered in plastic. They left no mess to speak of., I was very satisfied with their work and attention to detail. It’s easy to nitpick any job at anytime and there is nothing I would call them out on. Finally as for the functionality of the sump system I wish I had a comment on that at this time. We’ve lived in our house for 25 years and until around Thanksgiving of this year (2018) we’ve only had water about 4 times. Between Thanksgiving (2018) and New Years (2019) we got slammed 4 times and nothing since. With the symptoms of how our basement got water, I feel comfortable with the system Quality 1st installed and am confident they will stand behind their work and warranty. We’re also happy this is transferable to the next homeowner when we sell the house and it is an excellent selling point when the time comes."

"I have worked with Uprise twice now and both times they did great work. The first house they found and repaired a leak, and in the second house I had them install a new roof. I would not hesitate to call them again for future needs."

Customers say: True professional

"Antonio and his crew were amazing. His crew reconstructed an exterior brick wall of my 250 year old house that had been damaged by car collision. They did a great job preserving the look of this old house, supporting the structure, realigning the old bricks and applying new mortar to the joints. Really impressive work! Thank you Antonio"

"Nelson the owner from Premier Basement came out and assessed my problem quickly. He is very professional, fair pricing, and walked me through a process that I knew nothing about with his vast knowledge and experience. I highly recommend him and his company. It was a great experience amongst so many who try to take advantage of you and price gouge with high pressure sales."

"My wife and I were having trouble in our basement, as we were getting a mysterious puddle down there every so often, and we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We'd had vents replaced, sump pumps replaced, and then had two other basement companies come in to look at the issue. Now, we have french drains down there already, but they were installed before we bought the property. Both of the first two basement companies told us our drainage system was either all wrong or installed improperly, and that we'd have to install a whole new system along one wall for $4k (said the first company) or along all four walls for $14k (said the second company). That didn't seem right to me, particularly as we had a drainage system, but both companies seemed to care more about their sales pitch than addressing the problem.
At that point, I signed up for Angie's List (moral of the story, thank you AL) and called American A-1 with my hunch. Jeff came over the next day and was first and foremost a super friendly, extremely knowledgable guy.First, he took a look at our current drainage system and said something the other two hadn't — that, while he would have done one or two things differently, our french drains looked to be installed perfectly fine. So he started poking around other places as I explained what the other two companies had said. He wasn't only shocked at the price, but mortified that somebody would tell us to rip up our basement like that. As a former building inspector, he seemed to really great knowledge set in general (he even gave me some free tips as he was looking around), and eventually came to the conclusion that he thought it was a plumbing issue, most likely something to do with the boilers. Jeff said he wished he could do more, but he wasn't a trained plumber, but said that would be his next phone call. He wished me all the best and left his card.
Fast forward a few weeks, and it turns out Jeff was exactly right: a plumber came out and confirmed it was one of the boiler's pressure release systems going off intermittently, and projecting in such a way that it ended up as a puddle far away from it. No basement drain installation necessary.
Seriously, I cannot say enough nice things about these guys. Not only did they save us money, but they saved us from having our basement ripped up and not even having the issue resolved. Jeff didn't make me sit down and listen to a half-hour to an hour sales pitch about this, that, and the other thing — he came and did what I wanted the first two companies to do: try and figure out the problem and not assume they knew what it was.
While I can't speak to their actual work, I can say that I would recommend American A-1 in a heartbeat. I think it's easy to be cynical about service providers these days — and as my first two basement companies goes to show, you should still be — which is why when you find one of the truly good ones, it's such a revelation. American A-1 truly is one of the good ones. Don't hesitate to call them."

House Leveling questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can mudjack cracked concrete, but the cracks will need to be repaired once the concrete has been leveled. If the concrete is severely cracked in multiple places, replacement may be a better option, but for less severe cracking, mudjacking is a good solution as long as cracks are correctly caulked and sealed.

Trenching and boring are two distinct methods for installing underground utilities. Trenching involves digging a channel using equipment like an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. While it is a simpler process, it causes significant disruption to the surface, landscaping, and surrounding ecosystems.

Boring, also known as directional boring, is a less invasive alternative that uses a drill to create a tunnel for utility lines without disturbing the surface. This method is more precise and is ideal for installations that need to go underneath buildings, roads, or bodies of water. Although boring is less disruptive, it is generally more expensive than trenching.

There is no real alternative to underpinning, although mudjacking and polyjacking are other repair methods that can add support from underneath your foundation. Rather than placing supportive piers under your structure, these involve pumping a material under your slab to lift a sunken section back into its original position. Polyjacking, in particular, is sometimes a suitable solution for stabilization issues under slab foundations, but underpinning is often accepted as the best and most permanent solution.

Mudjacking is suitable for sidewalks, driveways, patios, and nearly all exterior flat structures. However, it may not suit severely damaged or heavily cracked areas.

Mudjacking is usually reserved for light-duty slabs, like patios, driveways, and sidewalks. However, it can be an effective way to lift garage slabs and concrete around the perimeter of the home, which could harm your foundation if it’s not done properly. The risk of damage is why having a professional mudjacking company carry out the work is important. This type of slab or foundation repair is relatively inexpensive, especially if you consider that a DIY job requires that you pay to rent the necessary equipment.
