"New driveway is perfect. Excellent fast and efficient work by Hector and his crew. Their detailing of the finished surface is beautiful. They went above and beyond by digging out and filling in a gap in my adjoining old driveway. The excavation process was well done and they left the site clean. It’s now 5 months old and again, just perfect. Highly highly recommended."

"Dan of Designer Impressions, LLC. Was professional, showed up on time and friendly. We had to have three concrete sidewalk blocks and the driveway apron removed and replaced. This was consider a small job by other contractors. Dan had no problem with that. Dan showed up on the day he stated and removed and hauled away all the concrete. Installed wire mess and expansion joints where needed. Poured the concrete and finished the job in a quick and timely manner. Dan and Steve were very professional neat and clean as they worked. Concrete looks great. I would recommend Dan of Designer Impressions, LLC."

"The craftsmanship is incredible. The pattern is cobblestone and visitors believe it is real stone. There were a couple minor issues, including 4 feet wide instead of 3 in one area and a delay in getting our stairs attached. The crew is fantastic and very professional."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Gravel is one of the few driveway materials that can handle rain the second it’s installed. Unlike asphalt, which needs days to set, or concrete, which requires weeks to cure, gravel is ready as soon as it’s compacted. It’s naturally permeable, allowing water to drain straight through—with no risk of pooling or surface damage. Gravel driveways are one of the most affordable, at $1 to $3 per square foot, and can also last upward of 100 years.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
