"Proud Work Ethics, LLC did a great job of power washing and staining my deck. Although we had changes to our original plan, Bob went with the flow and made sure I was satisfied with the outcome, Bob is a real professional, whom I feel goes out of his way to satisfy is customers. I would hire Bob again and highly recommend him to others."

"On the Job Painting exceeded our expectations. They just completed an exterior paint job of our shingles and trim. The crew was prompt, clean, courteous and meticulous with their work. Keith checked in regularly to insure we were being taken care of. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a painting contractor, and I will contact them again if we decide to do any interior painting work in the future. You may get quotes from other companies that come in lower, but do not be fooled. On the Job Painting performs at a higher quality than the average company. For this type of investment we are happy we chose them over other bids."

"The punchline: Design Painting undercut the price of the competition, offered to begin the job before everyone could, estimated the job would take three days (as did his competition), and then assembled a team who finished in one. I couldn't be happier with their price, time, and work, and will be a returning customer. More detail: I put my job's description on Angie's List, and Design Fencing called me back along with several others. I met with two other painters before Design Fencing because I was just shopping around, and I was sold the moment Jeremy and his crew came into my house to give me an estimate. They were extremely motivated and knowledgeable. Jeremy asked me about my family and when I mentioned that I had a seven week old son in the house, Jeremy upgraded the paint I would be using to make sure to have as minimal fumes as possible. Jeremy made time to go over his reviews with me, as well as photos from his team's previous work. He was able to guess what other painters I had seen, as well as their competitive price. He was able to undercut them, as well as starting the job before they were able to, and I was so happy to see the job done under budget and ahead of schedule. We negotiated a price that we could both be happy with, and he gave me an estimate of three days on the job. His crew showed up on time, laid down tarps, used name brand primer and paint, and asked my permission if they could stay a couple hours later on the first day of their job, to which I agreed. The team at Design Fencing worked so well together that, with the extended hours they voluntarily asked for, they were able to finish the *ENTIRE JOB* in that one (long) day. I am now able to begin moving my furniture into my house several days earlier than I was planning on, and it is wonderful. The paint job was by no means "rushed". The lines look great and were hand applied, the team cleaned up when they were done, and they offered to come back over the next couple days if I notice anything that needs a touch up, which I honestly didn't see the need for. They did a great job and the house looks new!"

"My husband and I hired Edy’s Quality Painting to paint the entire interior of our home. We chose them after reaching out to multiple companies because their pricing was reasonable and customer service impeccable. Rich, the person responsible for organizing Edy’s schedule was the first person to get back to us and the only person to explain in detail what we could expect if we hired them. Rich is also so personable; I felt like I was talking to an uncle every time I spoke to him. Once we hired them, it was evident that Edy is a true artist who takes pride in his work. Edy is also very considerate; he made a special trip back to paint our floor molding, as he knew we were getting our floors refinished. We were so happy with their service we hired Edy to come back and paint our stair railing. Even then, he made a special trip to finish the railing to ensure the weather permitted proper drying. We plan to hire them again in the near future to paint our deck and highly recommend them overall."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Here's the deal with leaving used rags covered in oil-based stain lying around in a pile: Depending on the conditions, these rags can take just an hour or up to a few days to combust. The source of ignition is caused by trapped heat that can be compounded if the rags are near a heat source.
