"They did get the project finished, eventually. The price was good and Jerry was courteous. However, the job dragged much much longer than I was initially told. Careless mistakes were made, some areas have rough finish, and they didn't clean up the mess after completing the project."

"I recently purchased a home which needed more than a little attention to bring it from 70's Ranch to Cottage Shabby Chic! I found NE Renovations on Angies List and called the owner, Richard Froais who promply responded to my request.

From the first meeting to our almost finished project, I have been impressed with him and his entire crew. I had a limited budget and even less time to complete the project and I can't believe what they accomplished in just a few weeks! From the remodeled kitchen to the brand new amazing marble bath and master bedroom and wallk-in closet, it has been a fantastic experience.

Special thanks to his amazing crew - Bill, Joe, Nick, Will, Jimmy and Pete!

I am looking forward to working with Richard to design and build a new deck this spring!

On time, on budget, done with a smile- I hate to see them go!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Routine cleaning, sealing/staining, and inspection prolong deck life and appearance.

Yes, snow should be removed from a deck to protect it from damage caused by moisture and heavy loads. Shovel the snow off of your deck regularly once it is more than four inches deep. Avoid using salt, which can damage your deck.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.
