"Replacing a complex wooded deck requires many different cuts. He was able to navigate the problems and come up with solutions that pleased me very much. He also installed an additional railing that was much appreciated by my wife and I. This was a 3 level deck."

Small jobs welcome

"We hired Jameson to install shiplap in our entire kitchen and to also cover the old very unattractive beams that ran throughout the room. Our home is 200 years old and nothing was level. Jameson worked tirelessly to get it right. The transformation is amazing. I would highly recommend him for any carpentry work. Iâ m hiring him again to make a custom cabinet !!"

"We've used other painters to do smaller rooms in the past, the work was barely better than I could do, just I didn't have to do it. Not this time. Thiago and team were prompt, like on the dot when they were said they would be there, even accommodating a scheduling change request by me. Their work is beautiful, we just sat there after and stared at our new walls. I don't think they ever looked this good, even when the house was built. They were very conscious of keeping things clean, being very mindful of our furniture and belongings. They were completely professional as well, even when I bumped into a freshly pained section, they politely went and showed me what was fresh to avoid it and how to get the paint out of my jacket. I've already recommended them to friends, and would hire them again in a heart beat. Oh, and unlike others we've worked with, Radiant gave us a quote and stuck to it, no surprises, no hidden fees, just straightforward honest businessmen."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

You typically don’t need a railing and handrails on a deck that’s less than 30 inches from the ground. However, consider adding them regardless. Railings provide additional safety for you and your guests who use your deck—plus, railings give the deck a more finished look than it would have without them.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

Yes, you can build a deck around a fire pit, as long as it is safely enclosed, meets code requirements, and is at least 15 feet away from your home. You’ll want to ensure you have a heat-resistant barrier between the fire pit and your deck to prevent any structural damage and fires. A galvanized ring surrounded by pavers, brick, or stone makes for a beautiful, safe, and sturdy design.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.
