"I needed tree limbs removed and trimmed on a large Maple tree that overhung my yard and roof from a next door neighbor's yard. I called Newspaper ads on tree services offered and after leaving my telephone number with each, I received no call backs. Time for Angies List and Homeadvisors! I was in luck. Rudy called me back immediately and after discussion, I made an appointment for an estimate. After living and raising my family here for over 55 years and having needed many professionals on upkeep of my home, I always worry if I made the right decision to go with a particular company. I made the choice to go with RGS Tree Service. No regrets. The service was excellent! They arrived on time. They were able to access the tree even though it was behind a fenced section of the back yard. The workers were courteous and certainly knew their profession. Then clean up! Superb!!   • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

We don’t recommend DIY tree trimming for a few different reasons. First, the tools required to trim a tree can be costly, up to $1,100 or more, for the ladders and specialized saws needed. 

Safety is another concern, especially when working with more mature trees. As a guideline, you should only DIY tree trimming when branches are less than two inches in diameter. Any more, and the safety risk becomes too high, which could lead to catastrophe. For this job, it’s safest to let a tree-trimming professional assess the work needed.

Ivy eventually kills trees by restricting its growth, blocking sunlight, absorbing nutrients and water from the soil, and weakening the tree. Trees with ivy are more likely to experience diseases, pests, rot, and fungi growth. When ivy weighs down tree branches, the tree is more likely to break during a storm and cause damage.

Any tree that needs to be pruned should be pruned to remove dead branches at least once a year. You may need to prune far more often if you’re trying to maintain a certain shape or to save a tree that suddenly becomes infected.

Steer clear of the area and contact your utility company immediately. It will have a website portal and/or a phone number to report downed trees and electrical issues. If the tree appears to be on public land, you may want to call your local government and report the issue there, too.
