"I had them replace a Circuit Breaker Box in a new home I just purchased. Additionally, they replaced 4 GFCI outlets (meaning they upgraded them to code). Anyway, they showed up at 9 o'clock sharp, worked quickly, quietly, and efficiently. Even with one of my dachshunds who has never quite learned the value of NOT barking at strangers, they acted as if the annoying dog wasn't there. Very polite and courteous. As they left once the job was complete (9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon) they mentioned that if we noticed anything wasn't right for us to call them and they'd come back out and investigate. The next morning we noticed one of the GFCI outlets wasn't working correctly and there was one other small issue that needed attention. I texted them, told them that noon would work for me, and literally at exactly 12:00 they showed up to correct the minor issues. Great customer service and professional as well. Big job with a big price tag but in the end, I know that my new home has a Circuit Breaker Panel that will function as required when needed instead of burning my house down. Not sure if there really is a price you can put on that kind of peace of mind. These guys are good. If you have a job you need done, then make the appointment here and now. I did and will do so again."

"I have been searching for electrician to come out and fix our voice, Network, and camera lines for our small business. I searched for weeks and wasn't so lucky. I came across homeadvisor.com and saw Progressive Consulting. I gave him a call, 10 minutes later her arrived at my business. I explained what I wanted and he already knew what it would take. He gave me a quote 30 minutes later. Very affordable price for the work he provides. The next day at 9:30 am he came out and completed the job just as estimated nothing less nothing more. I would HIGHLY recommend this company to anyone looking for electrical work. Quality and affordable couldn't ask for anything else."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

You can check if an electrician is licensed in New York by using the online license verification search tool offered by the New York State Education Department. The database is updated daily and gives you the option of searching by license number, contractor name, or the name of the business.

Smart meters send the readings over a wireless wide area network (WAN) to the power company. This network allows sending small amounts of data slowly over long distances, which is perfect for smart meter readings that occur monthly. If you would prefer a smart meter, contact your power company and consider springing for the cost of replacing your electric meter.

The NEC prohibits the installation of electrical panels within clothing closets. Closets are filled with flammable items like clothing, mothballs, shoe polish, plastic containers, and exposed light bulbs. If the panel develops a small electrical fire, it won’t take long to bloom into a real disaster. If you have an electrical panel in one of your home’s closets, move it as soon as possible with the help of a professional electrician.

Full home electrical inspections are mandatory if you’re buying a new home, but if you’re just looking for a safety checkup, you have some flexibility. If you don’t have any concerns and your property is relatively new, a basic inspection is usually sufficient. If it’s been a long time since your home was last inspected, or it’s an older home, a full home inspection can help catch any concerns that may fly under the radar.
