"The team at Water Solutions were great to work with from start to finish. We had water coming into our basement and didn't really know where to start, but they made the whole process simple and easy to understand. Casey took the time to walk us through everything and answered all of our questions without making it feel overwhelming. The crew showed up on time, kept everything clean, and got the job done exactly when they said they would. Since the waterproofing system was installed, our basement has stayed completely dry, even after some heavy rain. Overall, it was a smooth experience and definitely worth it. I'd recommend Water Solutions to anyone dealing with a wet basement."

"Groundworksâ listened to our input and throughly evaluated the requirements to support the basement walls and prevent water from coming in. They were on time and communicated clearly and timely. The Foreman did an evaluation and recommended a couple changes to the plan that I agreed with and weâ re beneficial. The 3 workers knew what they were doing and worked hard. I appreciate the manner they communicated and they were very friendly. Overall, they did a great job!"

"The workers arrived on time. The work went as planned over the three days it took to complete. My only complaints were they left my basement very muddy. They did sweep up any loose dirt/mud from the floor but the tile floor was still a mess. Also the contract states that they may need to move shrubs to get to installation areas. "Any item removed will be replanted but they are not responsible for damage to landscaping." The workers instead of removing a yew plant tried to trim back the shrub. They trimmed a 4' high, 6' diameter bush to two small twigs in the ground. I withheld a small amount from the total bill and did hold them responsible since they did not take reasonable care with the plant. Contractor has agreed to reduce price to compensate me for the damage. I did appreciate the foreman taking the time to verify that my doors would still close properly. However, upon them leaving I found that one door did close but could not be locked. I had to reset the deadbolt to secure the house. We did have some cracks in the walls and ceiling near the outside wall being repaired. I was told it could happen, I just wasn't expecting how severe they would be. So now I am looking at about $750-1000 more for repairs."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Several types of insulation are effective for crawl spaces, with spray foam and rigid foam boards being two of the best options. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a strong choice because it effectively repels moisture, resists biological growth, seals the air, and provides excellent thermal protection, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Rigid foam insulation boards are another excellent material as they insulate well, resist water damage, and will not settle over time like fiberglass or cellulose.

Yes, the air from a damp basement can travel up into your living area through a process called the stack effect, so moisture, mold spores, and other debris in your basement air can all decrease your indoor air quality on your main floors. Additionally, damp basements can promote the rotting of building materials, which can damage flooring, insulation, and framing on your first floor in addition to materials in the basement.

Whether to waterproof your basement from the interior or exterior depends on several factors, including your budget.

Exterior waterproofing is generally considered the superior method because it stops water at the source, preventing it from seeping into and damaging your basement walls. This approach offers the most protection, making it ideal if you use your basement for storage.

By contrast, interior waterproofing is often less expensive and requires less labor because the area is more accessible.

For maximum protection against water leakage and moisture, applying waterproofing measures to both the inside and outside is the best solution. However, if you must choose only one, stopping water from the outside is the most effective approach to preserve your foundation and prevent damage.

A vapor barrier keeps moisture out of the crawl space, while insulation reduces the amount of unconditioned air—and sometimes moisture—that enters the space. Coupling a vapor barrier with insulation can help prevent humidity and related moisture damage in a crawl space while also making your home more energy-efficient. Just be sure to use insulation that won’t get damaged from moisture, like rigid foam board or expanding spray foam insulation.

If you set up a dehumidifier, it will usually dry out your wet crawl space within 12 to 24 hours. Once the space is dry, it’s a good idea to take preventative measures to keep it dry. These include installing a French drain or other exterior foundation drainage system, installing a sump pump in the crawl space, and installing a vapor barrier in addition to leaving the dehumidifier running.
