Inhaling smoke from burnt food can be harmful to your health. Smoke and strong odors released when food burns can cause respiratory distress, especially for people with health conditions like asthma or for pregnant people. Even for those without such sensitivities, burnt food smoke can cause lung inflammation and irritation when inhaled.

Checking for mold yourself is crucial, as catching mold in the early stages is ideal. Mold can appear green, brown, black, blue, or yellow. It can smell musty and can feel like velvet, leather, or cotton. 

Most often, mold grows near water damage. It’s best to inspect these places for signs of mold growth:

  • Basement: Look in corners, windows, carpet, closets, and around appliances. 

  • Bathrooms: Check around sinks, ceilings, and around toilets. 

  • Kitchen: Inspect around the sink, behind the refrigerator, and behind trash can.

  • Attic: Look near the insulation and near intake and exhaust vents.

Just because you find mold in your home does not mean you need to pursue professional remediation services. You can often clean small amounts of surface mold, such as in bathrooms or on windowsills, using household products. However, extensive mold growth, persistent odors, or mold caused by water damage require professional remediation. A good rule of thumb is to hire a pro when the mold is in an area larger than 10 square feet, poses health risks, or affects the structural integrity of your home.

If you need mold remediation, you’re probably looking at a bill of a couple thousand dollars or more. Sometimes, though, your homeowner’s insurance policy may cover some or all of the costs of the remediation. If the black mold forms because of a covered event, such as a storm that damages your roof, and causes leaking or flooding in the basement, it’s possible the policy also covers mold remediation. It never hurts to ask your insurance company if it will cover the cost of black mold remediation.
