Rod Kush’s Furniture was incorporated on August 7, 1987, as Furniture On Consignment, Inc. Furniture on Consignment was started by Rod Kush after a successful career in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Oilers. The merchandise sold when Furniture on Consignment opened for business was primarily used furniture. As the business evolved, it moved away from selling just used furniture to also carrying first quality new merchandise. The company relocated to 72nd and L Street in 1992 from the previous location of 94th and J Street and experienced tremendous growth, adding Appliance & Electronics, Carpet & Flooring, Rent to Own, and Mrs. K’s to the Omaha location, and then subsequently opening additional locations in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1996, Fremont, Nebraska in 2003, and Norfolk in 2004. In addition, Mattressland stores were added in Bellevue and Lincoln, Rent-to-Owns in Benson, South Omaha, Council Bluffs and the Mall of the Bluffs. In 2005, Rod also opened numerous Cash Advance locations around the Omaha and Lincoln areas. In April of 2006, the Rent-to-Own locations separated into their own stand alone company and the retail furniture business was closed. In October of 2006, 7 Day Furniture, Inc was established at the old 72nd and L Street location in Omaha more streamlined and efficient than its predecessor. As the retail trade began to grow, the rent-to-own and cash advance stores were permanently closed in 2009 and a new retail outlet was opened in Lincoln on May 15, 2009. Even as the economy trended downward in 2008-2009, 7 Day Furniture managed to keep the sales steady and increasing. In August 2011, the Lincoln store was renovated and a new showroom and warehouse opened.

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

Lincoln homeowners are gravitating toward performance fabrics and stain-resistant textiles, often in earthy tones inspired by local prairies and sunsets. Modern farmhouse and mid-century modern styles are especially popular, blending classic frames with updated upholstery. There’s a growing preference for sustainable materials and multi-use furniture like storage ottomans. Husker-inspired color schemes and leather finishes are also trending for family rooms and entertainment spaces.

Helpful?

In NE, pay attention to cushion sagging that worsens after humid summers, persistent musty smells, or creaking frames—these may indicate hidden moisture damage or weakened joints. Small holes or wood shavings can signal pest activity, common in older NE homes. If you notice fabric fraying, loose springs, or shifting frames, these early signs can escalate and should be addressed promptly to avoid extensive furniture restoration.

Helpful?

Before beginning upholstering in Lincoln, plan your project for late spring or early fall when humidity is lower. Secure specialty fabrics and reupholstery supplies early, as local shops may have limited stock. Prepare a workspace with good airflow and stable temperatures, especially if using adhesives. Store all materials off basement floors to prevent moisture exposure, and double-check you have all necessary tools for furniture restoration.

Helpful?

In Lincoln, many historic homes feature arched doorways, narrow hallways, or split-level entries, which can make moving large furniture for reupholstery challenging. Ranch and mid-century homes often have tight corners or built-in shelving that limit maneuverability. Before starting, measure all access points and consider disassembling oversized pieces. Lincoln’s seasonal humidity can affect fabric and foam, so climate-controlled storage is recommended during your project.

Helpful?

For minor upholstering repairs in Lincoln, you can reattach loose trim, patch small fabric tears, or add new foam inserts to sagging cushions using supplies from local hardware stores. Always ventilate your workspace when using adhesives and check for hidden moisture, especially in basements. Wear gloves and eye protection when removing staples. For structural repairs, antiques, or suspected mold, consult a local furniture restoration expert.
