I have been doing this kind of work since the early 2000s, I have built multiple single-family homes from the ground up as well as a few commercial projects. I have had my hands in just about every aspect of the construction process. Although they come at some expense to purchase and set up, given the water savings a smart sprinkler can offer, many homeowners think they’re well worth the cost. If you already have a sprinkler system installed, some smart sprinkler controllers can simply replace your existing sprinkler timer—a process you can do if you’re comfortable with basic wiring.

Sprinkler heads need a pressure of 30 PSI, with an operating range of 15 to 30 PSI. Drip lines also need a similar operating rate of 15 to 30 PSI and a pressure of 20 PSI. If the pressure is too low, the water won't be evenly distributed, but if the pressure is too high, parts of the lawn or garden will be over-watered and possibly damaged by friction from the high pressure. These components need operating ranges rather than a hard and fast PSI to keep the sprinkler system efficient.

Moving a sprinkler zone involves moving multiple sprinkler heads and rerouting multiple lines from one area of your lawn to another. Because this is an even bigger project than removing a sprinkler line, a job that is already best left to the pros, you should hire a local sprinkler installation pro to help you move, add, or remove sprinkler zones.

Installing a home sprinkler system costs an average of $4,000, with prices ranging from $1,600 to $14,000. It’s less expensive to install a system in an unfinished home ($0.80 to $2 per square foot) than it is to add one to a finished home ($2 to $7 per square foot). Sprinklers are also more expensive to install in high-rise buildings, for which you can expect to pay a minimum of $4 per square foot.

You can find irrigation lines whether you dig or not. If you decide to dig, do so near valve boxes and around sprinkler heads. Once you find the first pipe, you can map the system from there and use spray paint or tape to mark the pipe layout throughout.  

If you don’t feel like digging, aside from getting a map from the maker of the irrigation system, you can still find irrigation lines by locating the valve box and following a line back to the head sprinklers. You can also use a water-detection device or a metal detector, which will work if the lines have metal tracer wires.
