"We hired The Bath Shop to renovate our master bath and ½ bath. The work they did is exceptional! My requests were not typical, and it took months to find a licensed contractor who was willing to take on the work and whom I felt comfortable hiring. The Bath Shop was willing to expand their portfolio. Any concerns I had were addressed. The people were friendly and we got to know several of them. But, I do have some complaints. They said a project like mine would take 6-8 weeks. We had to move out of the bedroom for 13 weeks. Granted, I made some changes along the way that delayed parts of the projects some a bit, but not 5 weeks. I’m really glad we had a spare bedroom to move into and we didn’t need to get a hotel room! This project started in early March, just before everything was shut down. So, I was working at home throughout the majority of the project. If I had still been going to the office everyday, I may not have even been aware of some of these issues. Most of the time, the night before, we’d get a text telling us who was coming over the next day. Many, many times either someone else showed up to do something else or no one came over at all. This was extremely irritating and frustrating to me. It was rare that what we were texted the night before actually happened, so that is not reliable at all. Perhaps that is typical in this business. Like I wrote earlier, their work was exceptional and I’m glad I hired them."

"Jose was great to work with and was able to come out the same day I called him. My granite countertop had settled over time and the seams were uneven. Jose quickly diagnosed the issue, explained what caused it, and how he’d correct it. He leveled the countertop seams, matched the seam glue perfectly, and my countertops look good as new."

"JM Marble and Granite did an amazing job replacing our old countertop with a new, modern Quartz countertop. The process was extremely easy and JM made a great recommendation that saved us some money. After going to the showroom to pick out our slab, JM suggested a different slab that was more economical and that we actually liked better. After the slab selection the work was completed very quickly and scheduled to fit with the timing of the entire kitchen redesign. Installation took less than one day. JM also did our bathroom countertops and built-in desk top to match the kitchen. Their work was very high quality and looks amazing. We highly recommend this contractor."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

One of the best ways to use bar-height countertops is as a divider. If you have an open concept home, this can visually separate your kitchen from your living space. This countertop is also ideal for entertaining. You can cook in your kitchen, while your guests can sit at the island and be at a similar level.

New countertops can last for anywhere between 15 and 50 years, with the exact lifespan depending on the material:

  • Quartz: 50 to 100 years

  • Marble: 50 to 100 years

  • Granite: 50 to 100 years

  • Laminate: 15 to 20 years

  • Concrete: 20 to 30 years

  • Tile: 40 to 100 years

Keep in mind some materials are more likely to stain and chip than others, which is an important factor to consider when it comes to the longevity of your countertops. Some materials also need special cleaning and maintenance, like tile countertops, which need grout cleaning, and concrete countertops, which need resealing.

Durable, contemporary concrete countertops can increase home values. However, they might not offer as high an ROI as quartz or granite surfaces, which offer a timeless aesthetic and durability likely to appeal to a range of home buyers. Installing new countertops is a home improvement that can yield an average of 60% to 80% ROI when done well, using quality, perennially popular materials.

Gray is always a safe bet when painting concrete countertops, since concrete is a variation of gray. You may also choose black or white, but those are much starker colors that only do well in certain kitchens.

No, you shouldn’t put hot pans on solid surface countertops because they’re only heat-resistant up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Play it safe and use trivits to prevent damage.
