"Nicolas and his team did many times more than we expected. We needed French drains all around the house - metal roof, no gutters - plus hardscaping entryway beds and grading and drainage in a sloped gravel driveway that needs repair about every four years. In two days Nicolas completed everything. He regraded and sloped the driveway, installing two French drains we hadn't even talked about to redirect the water. This is the second project we've gotten him to do for us. The good news: you'll get great work if you hire him. The bad news: he is so good you'll have to wait. The word is out - he's booked months ahead. If you have a project you want done right and you can wait a bit, call Nicolas."

"Fantastic! I've been in construction (large projects, i.e., 5 million to 300 million plus) for over 30 yrs. I wanted to gift my oldest grand daughter a parking slab (approx 750 sq ft) at her home and reached out to Angi's list for contractors willing to do smaller jobs. J&A was one of 6 leads they sent me and by far the best of the lot. They showed up on time to do their estimate, rather than asking to reschedule an appt they scheduled, or not showing up at all. They had an estimate in my hands the same day, rather than 2 days later. More importantly, their estimate was turn key. Here's what it will cost and here’s what that will get you. Unlike the overinflated checklist I received from another contractor where everything was additional and would have cost $2,100.00 more than J&A's bid. The crew showed up on the day and time they said they would and the job was completed faster than they they thought. 2.5 vs 3 days from grassy area to cleared, formed, poured and finished. They were polite, respectful of the rest of the property (no ruts or truck tire tracks in the lawn), and cleaned up after themselves as they went. For a small Contractor they were Impressively Professional. If we need more work they will get the call and I highly recommend them!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Recycled asphalt is not better than gravel, but can be a good alternative. It is inexpensive, but not as low-cost as gravel, and doesn’t tend to last as long. Recycled asphalt isn’t as dusty as gravel and is more environmentally friendly. The black look can be something that homeowners prefer. No matter what, ensure you choose an experienced recycled asphalt contractor.

When comparing installation costs, asphalt is often less expensive upfront than concrete. Asphalt prices typically range from $7 to $15 per square foot, while concrete can range from $3 to $18 per square foot. However, long-term costs should also be considered. Concrete driveways generally last longer (up to twice as long) and require less maintenance, which can make them more affordable over their lifespan. While asphalt has a lower installation cost and is easier to repair, it requires more frequent maintenance, such as sealing, which can add up over time. Therefore, while concrete is more expensive initially, its durability may offset the cost in the long run.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

Asphalt driveways last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, but if you don’t stay on top of repairs, you may find yourself spending extra to replace your driveway before its typical lifespan. Stay on top of repairing cracks and potholes by routinely inspecting your driveway once or twice a year. It’s a good idea to pressure wash your asphalt driveway at least once a year to keep it clean. Apply a sealer every one to five years, based on your climate.
