"The representative from Modern Plumbing took pictures, explained possible sources and how to figure out the source from use. Once the source was found, described the repair and had it done in 20 minutes with a minimum of fuss. Very impressed with the detailed explanation throughout this issue. FYI, this was done via my Home Warranty, so the cost is not indicative of the actual charges."

"I needed to move my old water heater because of some work being done on my house.  Since the existing one was 9+ years old I realized it would be cheaper to install a new one rather than pay to move the existing one and have to replace it in a year or two.

I initially called the top ranked company on Angie's list as they were referred to me by the contractor doing the renovation on my house.  They quoted me $2500 for a new water heater with storage tank in the new location and $1700 to move the old water heater.

I then called another plumber on Angie's list and after speaking with him he actually recommended that I call the Water Heater Experts.  The entire process with them was seamless.  After speaking on the phone with their sales rep (I called after hours and he returned my call within an hour) I had an appointment set up for a free quote the next day.  The gentleman who quoted the job was also the person who installed the new system.  He gave three options: $700 to move the existing water heater, $1500 to install a new water tank in the new location, and $2500 (before rebates) to install a tankless system.  After a $250 rebate from Piedmont Natural Gas, a $100 coupon from Angie's list, and a $300 tax credit the tankless system came to $1850.

I decided to go with the tankless system because the cost wasn't much more than a new water heater with storage.  It's smaller and puts out more than enough water for my household's use.  The installation took about 5-6 hours and involved two people.  They cleaned up when they left and the entire operation was painless.  The only thing I still have left to do is have an inspector come out, but they are going to work with me to schedule that for sometime during the next week.

Based on the age of the home's in my neighborhood I expect that several will have to replace water heaters in the next few years.  I'll definitely recommend them when that time comes.

"Beautifully! Tom was prompt on all counts - arriving to give an estimate, starting the job, and working tirelessly to get the job done in the timeframe he quoted. He took a bathroom that was truthfully a wreck (I was unaware of how bad it really was, when I bought the house in November) and completely transformed it! It turned out so beautifully that I've been telling my friends I'm going to put a velvet rope across the doorway and charge them to walk by and look at it. I could not be happier with the work he did."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You should flush your AC drain line once every three months to keep it clear of debris and buildup. Keeping your AC drain line clean prevents clogs, backups, mold growth, and extra wear on your AC unit. If you live in a humid area or have several furry pets, up your cleaning schedule to once a month.

A washing machine should drain the water used during its cycle through a drainpipe and out through the house’s plumbing. This is the same plumbing that sinks and shower drains run to, and if the U-bend is installed correctly, it shouldn’t smell. The total drainage from the house is then integrated into the city sewer system or, if you’re in the country, dispersed into a septic tank.

First, find the cleanout pipe in your yard. Unscrew the cap—you may need a wrench to do so. Then, get a drain snake. You can use a non-motorized one, but a motorized snake will make the job a little easier. Feed the snake through the pipe until it reaches the clog. Spin the snake continuously, but don’t try to feed it through the pipe anymore. Keep spinning until you feel it break the clog apart.

Air gaps get clogged by a few different means. Over time, food and grime can collect in the air gap, leading to a blockage. Mineral deposits from hard water are a common problem. Mineral buildup creates a film in the air gap and tubing, which can cause flow issues, as well as attract debris. Homeowners with hard water may want to remove mineral deposits regularly to keep the air gap clean and clear.

Vinegar is better for an AC drain line because it’s less corrosive and won’t damage the pipes. It’s also a safer and easier product to use. Bleach should not be used on your AC drain line because it can corrode your pipes and harm the evaporator coil in your air conditioner.
