We specialize in all things land management such as grading, homesite prep, land clearing. bush hogging, driveway installation and maintenance. We haul gravel, stone, and mulch to you. We also provide firewood bulk or bundled.

"Hired this company to correct a boggy area in my horse pasture. They installed drains and gravel. After 2 months there is still no change in the wet area. Not only that, the area is actually worse as all the ground is churned up and there is gravel everywhere. The pasture is complexly unusable. He also left deep ruts in my pasture and front lawn from his equipment and rocks everywhere! I spent days cleaning up. I have asked for my money back as I now have to hire another company to fix everything he did wrong and redo the entire project, but he refuses. The owner of this company is 16 years old, which I did not know when I hired him. He has equipment and some knowledge but not enough for complex jobs, and does not have the professionalism to start by his work."

Organic Growers School offers sustainability coaching and consulting for anyone interested in living a more land-based life: home-owners, farmers, backyard gardeners, DIY homesteaders and urban growers. Our professional coaches come to you, consulting on-site within Western North Carolina and by skype with clients further away. A variety of custom support programs are available to assist you in your growing journey. This program supports the non-profit work of Organic Growers School Contact Brandon Greenstein at (828)214-7833 or [email protected],

"We chose Brandon to come up to our property to give us advise on work we are planning on doing over the next 3 years since he came well recommended by OGS. His advise on what we can accomplish on our property and our limitations was very informative and worth having him evaluate what we are dealing with. We plan on bringing Brandon back up to give us more advise as we move forward with developing our property."

We are a smaller local Lawn/Landscaping and property management company that employs up to 4 people at a time. Our daily crew consist of 2 to 3 men per job, with other men available if needed. We also have several other sub contractors that we work with if the job you need is out of our range. We take our payments through cash or check at this time. We offer special seasonal discounts to customers that use our services annually. Our most popular service is bi-weekly for lawn and property maintenance, though we have many HOA and residential accounts we service weekly.

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Mulching any time of year can attract termites, so there’s no added risk in the fall. The important thing to remember is that termites are attracted to rotting wood, so you need to lay a thin enough layer that won’t trap too much moisture and lead to rotting. A layer between 1 and 4 inches thick should provide all the benefits you’re looking for without attracting termites.

Mulch is made from natural materials, which will break down and add nutrients to your soil for better plant and soil health, so removing old mulch is unnecessary before putting down new mulch. However, if you live in a particularly moist area, it’s possible that the old mulch will harbor fungus or mold, which can hurt plant health. If you notice these issues, you might want to consider removing the old mulch first. Otherwise, save time and money by placing new mulch right over the old mulch.

Mid to late spring is the best time of year to mulch. If you do it too early in the spring, the mulch could slow down the warming process of the soil and affect how well plants grow. By mid to late spring the temperatures are usually steadying, making it an ideal time to spread mulch.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

You can choose from various kinds of organic mulch and inorganic mulch. Organic mulch may be in the form of wood chips, pine needles, and compost and eventually decompose. Inorganic mulch, such as gravel, rocks, and landscape fabric, is more durable but doesn’t help the soil.
