"Chris was incredibly easy to work with! My deck was in pretty bad shape and Adams brought it up to code, making it safe, sturdy, and strong. They also performed all this work with in three days time, fixing things that weren't originally part of the contract, but something they noticed need to be done. My deck looks wonderful and feels very safe. Adams brought it back to life and made it useable again! If I had any other project I needed done, I would contact Adams first!"

"AJ and his team:Jimmy,Pete,Mark and his cohort were great. Theyâ ve been here three years ago and believe it or not it was AJ (the owner) and his father. My deck being a hardwood (Ipe-Brazilian) requires extra attention. Stain(an Australian timber oil) has to be rolled on delicately and then brushed. It ainâ t easy folks. And I might add we had deck furniture and plants that weighed in excess of 50 lbs. Took four days and there may have been some latency in return calls thatâ s the business world. Trust them. Great work. AJ is a force of nature and I would encourage you to give him a call as he is very resourceful and a wonderful guy to work with."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

PVC decking might be long-lasting, but this synthetic material lacks the natural aesthetic or sustainability of wood decking. If you want to match your decking to your new garden furniture or just freshen up the faded surface, it’s not usually possible to paint PVC decking. When comparing PVC to composite decking, PVC is pricier and more prone to warping in hot regions.

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
