"I hired this company because they were local and the customer service was excellent! We had flooding damage to the drywall on the first floor of our home after Hurricane Helene. The Mr. Handyman team was very kind and sympathetic to our needs. Tim, the lead technician, came out and provided us with an estimate on the spot, once we signed he began working right away! The job was able to be completed the same day and it looks fantastic! We truly appreciate all the hardworking folks at Mr. Handyman and we will absolutely be continuing to do business with them! We would (already have) recommended them to anyone in need of handyman services! Thank you!"

"Jesùs and his team are great workers. They work quickly and do a very professional job. The walls are smooth and they even did a primer coat so it was easier when we painted. They keep a clean work site and stay in contact about pricing and any questions. We have worked with this company more than once and even referred them to friends in our neighborhood. I would trust them to do work in our home anytime. They have done framing, trim carpentry, and installation of doors and rails as well as painting and drywall work."

"We were out of town when the work was done, but returned to find the house looked great. From the time Ben came to do the estimate until I made final payment I found 360 Painting to be very transparent and professional. We’re well pleased!"

"Another great job by Dave from his team Cransten Handyman and Remodeling, we had a ceiling leak that had done some damage in our garage they removed all the molded things, took out the damage, replaced insulation, put up new drywall, and painted and all looks great again. I am very satisfied with their work, a very knowledgeable team. I recommend this company for having a professional worker!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

There are several things you should not do when installing drywall. Common mistakes include: adding too many screws, over-sanding, not adding backing support, and installing drywall unevenly. You also should avoid screwing into the same place twice, installing Sheetrock with tapered edges on the outside, and making too many joints.

A utility knife is sharp enough to score the drywall and it may work in a pinch for outlet box holes. However, one of the best tools for drywall when you need to make exact cuts for an outlet box quickly is a drywall saw. This handheld tool has a longer blade than a utility knife, so it penetrates the thickness of the drywall easily. The design of its handle and the teeth in its blade make it easier to control while cutting quicker than you can with a utility knife.

Vinegar and bleach are effective options for removing mold from drywall. Vinegar is a better choice if you have a smaller mold issue while bleach is best if you have a larger mold problem. If the area you're cleaning has limited ventilation, using vinegar would be a better option. In that case, you could mix vinegar with baking soda to remove more stubborn mold growth.

Whether you need a drywall anchor depends on the specifics of your project, particularly what you're hanging and where. You do not need a drywall anchor if you can screw or nail the object directly into a wooden stud, as the wood provides sufficient support and stability. However, if there are no studs in the location where you plan to hang the item, you should use drywall anchors to ensure it is securely supported. For very lightweight objects, like small pictures, adhesive picture hanging strips can be a suitable alternative to anchors.

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.
