"Todd took a lot of time and energy to teach us about the health and wellbeing of our trees. His love for trees was infectious and inspiring. He very generously allowed a group of amateur arborists to watch and ask questions. It wasnâ t cheap to hire Todd, but the investment in our fruit orchard and also the knowledge we learned will be well worth it!"

"Hi, my name is John Spears and my wife and I hired Gil tree and lawn service. We live on a green belt that runs on two sides of our property. I had suffered from a stroke on September 18, 2024 and been unable to keep the BRUSH from overtaking our fence line and grossly encroaching into our backyard. Gil and his crew arrived at 8:30 AM promptly as he said he would and they finished by 11:15 AM. During that time I would hobble around watching and answering any questions they asked of me and they addressed me with yes Sir and no Sir and would walk with me not ahead of me. Being 64 years of age I greatly appreciated that. The only regret I have is I didn’t take any before pics but if you could use your imagination the pine needles they put down shows how far the thick brush had over taken our yard and the bare spot along the fence line shows how far in our back yard. Knowing we were tight on funds he put the pine needles down without charge to keep the weeds at bay."

"Spartan did a great job. I had a tree hanging over a neighbors property and they removed it without dropping anything on my Neighbors side or shed. They cleaned up after themselves and left my yard cleaner than it was before. I will hire them again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

It depends on the type of tree. Typically, late spring on the cusp of winter is ideal for trees about to emerge from dormancy and produce new buds. That said, late fall is ideal for certain deciduous trees prone to bleeding sap. Avoid trimming trees in early spring, when they’re prone to disease.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

You’ll have to balance up the cost, the value of the tree (sentimental or otherwise), and the risk factors. An experienced arborist will help you understand whether transplanting is likely to be successful. The cost and hassle of transplanting a large, well-established tree are often not worth it, especially if the species is fast-growing and easy to source. The decision depends on the age and species of the tree, the conditions in the new site location, and how careful the company is when digging out and moving the tree.

It’s possible, although a lot depends on the cause of damage and what steps you take. If the remaining parts of the maple tree are alive and not under attack by disease or pests, they can often be saved even if large portions of the maple tree have died. Frequent watering, careful pruning, mulch, and any recommended fungicides or insecticides can all help with survival.
