Removing the branches went well and for a GREAT price. They were actually working for my neighbor so I did not have a contract with a specific date and time to have my work done. When they arrived to do the neighbors work they did my branches first. They took off the branches and limbs without damaging either home (both in the Historic neighborhood of West End)
The branches were at least 60 feet up and I had not been able to find a someone that wanted to do the job. (not that I was looking that hard) So when the house next door was purchased and renovated, I talked with their contractor made a deal to have the tree service he was hiring remove my branches at he time they removed branches from the same tree hanging over the neighbors house. That tree service was Compton. .
They were very competent and hard working and finished the agreed on work for the tree for both my neighbor and myself. Before they left for the day so I talked with the Compton in charge. He agreed to do more work on my property in the next week and clean the yard from todays work when he came back. They did an excellent job of cleaning the neighbors yard.
We called several times and were told we were on the schedule for the next 1 to 2 weeks.
After 3 weeks I paid our mow and blow lawn crew to clean up the limbs and brush that had been left in my yard.
Perhaps 5 months later, the neighbor was having some more work done so I went to talk to the team doing the work. It turned out to be Compton. I told him if they were busy, we could call some other tree service companies. He said there had been a major storm and that he had been booked full time since then and he could do the work at the end of next the week.
3 weeks later I called Bobby's Tree Service and Lusk for estimates on the remaining work.
I did not have a written contract with Compton, so I am not complaining about the follow-up behavior, just stating what occurred. There was a major storm and he probably had bigger fishes to fry than my yard. The work they did do for me was excellent and $500 seemed very, very reasonable.
All In All, Compton does excellent work, but get a signed contract. Anyone who is any good is always booked several months in advance. I will have Bobby's Tree Service do the remaining work, but he will not even put me on his schedule until I sign and fax him the estimate he gave me and then it will be 1 to 2 months before I float to the top of the pile.
I spoke with Eric about the Cherry Blossom. I told him I didn't want it and quot;lopped, and quot; I just wanted as healthy a tree as possible while addressing its overgrowth issues.
Eric walked me through what he felt was the best course of action for the tree, describing why areas needed attention and why some limbs had died. He also pointed out the maple tree close by - which another service pruned earlier this year - had growths on the bark because limbs were not cut back to the collar of the branches. He told me it wasn't something that had to be addressed (I could let it grow out and see if I liked the new growth pattern). I appreciated the knowledge (Eric's been in the biz over 20 years and has been a certified arborist).
When I asked about making an appointment, he let me know they could do the work as soon as they completed my neighbor's yard (at a cost that was competitive with the quote from the other company). Awesome. It took them about two hours to do the work and clean-up. The result is beautiful: the tree is a cleaner, lighter version of itself. I keep looking out my window to check out the tree because I love how it turned out. Now I won't have to duck to mow the area around it next spring and that forsythia should thrive since it will get more sunlight.
