"Roy and his team were a pleasure to work with. After purchasing a beach house in Kill Devil Hills we discovered that squirrels were living in the attic which seemed like it was going to severely hurt my renovation budget. Roy and his team went above and beyond what other restoration companies would do. They cleaned, disinfected, reinforced the entry point, and replaced the insulation. They even reconnected duct work and additional repairs while they were up there. Not only did they complete the work within budget and scope but the insight, transparency, and assistance were invaluable. Roy treats his customers like long time friends and is happy to do whatever it takes to get the desired result. So thankful I found 7 sounds restoration. 11/10 stars and will definitely hire again for future projects."

"J&N Heating and Cooling came out to my residence, diagnosed the issues I was having with my HVAC, provided a quote for the project, ordered the new unit, and installed it all within a short period of time. Their installer, Nathaniel, is an excellent worker and provided me the assurance that the job would get done right the first time. Their affordability will get anyone top notch service. Thank you, J&N!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To lower humidity quickly, run a dehumidifier or your home's air conditioner or turn on exhaust fans to extract moisture. These methods can quickly and effectively bring your home's humidity levels to a comfortable condition. However, you should consistently practice humidity-reducing tasks to maintain proper indoor humidity levels.

If you’re planning an AC replacement, choosing an AC with a higher SEER rating may save you money in the long run. Tax credits could cover as much as 30% of the job, and you’ll notice smaller utility bills (particularly if you live in a hot climate where you need to constantly run the AC). Generally, you can expect to pay between $350 and $1,500 for each SEER rating increase. Weigh the cost against your typical utility bill to figure out what’s worth it to you.

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

Both evaporator coils and condenser coils are recyclable and contain valuable, sellable metals such as copper and aluminum. Not only is it more earth-friendly to take them to a local metal recycling facility, but you can also trade them in for cash. Also, once the coils are removed from the system, they won’t have any traces of refrigerant, so you won’t have to arrange for recycling Freon or R-410A unless you’re disposing of the entire AC system.
