"It went beautifully!! Very professional. Answered all my questions, promptly. Josephine has a great eye for color, and design. AJ is a master with paint, and the wall repairs. My 1936 bungalow looks beautiful. I would hire them again, in a split second."

Customers say: True professional

"They did an amazing job staining our log home and painting the porch and railings that surrounds 3 sides of the house. They did all the cleaning, caulking, scraping, then 2 coats of stain. They even came back for touch ups. The house looks wonderful. They were great to work with, left no mess… very professional and used only the best quality stain and paint. I’d definitely recommend them!"

Small jobs welcome

"The only hiccup in the process was picking out stain and types from the store, which was made easier by his willingness to text with me as I was ordering."

"We had a great experience with Rich Line! They were always on time when they said they would be at our house from consultation to the 3 days of work. They even came back a few days later to help put all of our heavy furniture back on to the deck. They were curious and professional. The deck looks amazing! They had to pressure wash, sand and stain. We had a dark stain on the deck from 5 years ago that we didn’t like. They had to spend a lot of time sanding and getting the old color off. They also replaced a few boards. We feel like we have a newly built deck. We will definitely contact them if we have any other paint jobs we need done at our house."

"James and the crew did great work for us. We have a 15 year old fence around our property and it has not been cleaned or stained in many years. They pressure washed and then put on Sherwin Williams Stain Deck finish. The fence looks brand new!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.

Constant exposure to inclement weather conditions can damage your deck, causing it to fade, warp, or crack over time. Regular maintenance keeps it looking and performing its best. That means giving it a good cleaning and applying a quality sealant or wood treatment to help defend against moisture, sun damage, and everyday wear.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

You can refresh a painted deck by either giving it a thorough cleaning or refinishing the deck altogether. Chipped or faded paint, as well as extensive damage, often calls for a new finish. To do this, remove the original coat of paint with a sander and add either a new coat of paint or a stain to protect the wood below.

Stains penetrate wood best when it's cool and dry, so you want to avoid moisture. If the wood is wet upon application, or if it rains before the stain dries, the water will soak into the wood and displace the staining solution. This leads to a flaky and blotchy look, which is the opposite of a sumptuous even coat. Once the stain has fully cured, after about 3 days, rain shouldn’t cause you any problems.
