"A young woman came to my door to offer the pest control service. I almost never  talk to door-to-door solicitors but she seemed very nice so I listened. I had been thinking of having some pest control done so it was a timely visit. She gave the "we are treating houses in the neighborhood so we have a Half price offer of $99 initial visit and $109 for follow up visits". Come to find out $99 is the going rate for any company and $109 is probably expensive.

My main issue with this company is the price. I expect a professional  company to offer their best price first and charge the same for all households. When the  guys came to do the service they asked me "What price did you agree to for the followup visits?" I said, "Wait, I could have gotten a better price??" and one of them said rather snidely "No, you already signed your service agreement". Later I walked over to their truck to pay, and saw the printouts of the customers for two days. Each address had a price next to it, and it ranged from $99,  down to $49!! Many other them were $79. And I'm sure I could have and should have gotten a cheaper price for follow up visits.

When dealing with a (supposed) professional company I do not expect to have to haggle over the price like it's a flea market. Give me your best price first, and charge the same for everyone. This leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth and I am sorry I went with this company. I am stuck with them for a year but will not be renewing. And that's the last time I talk to a door to door solicitor.

Bottom line: Price of service is highly negotiable - haggle with them mercilessly!!

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

Identifying the specific animal running on your roof at night can be challenging without direct observation. Common nocturnal roof visitors include raccoons, squirrels, opossums, and rats. Raccoons are bigger and can create heavy thumping sounds. Squirrels are agile and may produce rapid scurrying noises. Opossums tend to move stealthily with less noise. Rats can make scratching or gnawing sounds. To determine the culprit, look for signs like footprints, droppings, or damaged areas near the roof. For accurate identification, consult a pest control professional or set up wildlife cameras near potential entry points.

While carpet beetles won’t bite you like bed bugs do, they still aren’t pests you’d want to find in your home. Carpet beetles in their larva stage can be voracious and cause a lot of damage as they eat through fabrics on furniture, clothing, bedding, rugs, and other materials. If you see carpet beetles, you’ll want to have an exterminator come by to assess the damage and control the infestation.

Roaches may not be quite as common on the top floors of a home, but they can easily climb up there if they want to. Second stories are less likely to have food sources and somewhat less likely to have moisture issues, so most roaches are attracted to bottom levels first. However, humid attics and similar spots can help roaches thrive.

To determine if you have a rat or mouse infestation, look for several key differences. The most obvious is the size of the rodent: rats are significantly larger with thicker bodies, while mice are much smaller and more slender. You can also identify them by their droppings; rat droppings are larger and rounder, about the size of a raisin, while mouse droppings are smaller, like a grain of rice, and often have pointed ends. Other signs include the sounds they make, as rats produce louder scratching and gnawing noises due to their size. Behaviorally, rats tend to be more cautious, whereas mice are more curious and might be seen more often. Additionally, rat nests are typically larger than those of mice. If you are unable to see the pest or find clear evidence, a professional inspection can provide a definitive identification.

Squash bugs technically aren’t invasive, as they are native to North America. However, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t incredibly destructive. These pests can cause significant damage to squash, pumpkins, and other cucurbit crops by feeding on plant sap and injecting toxins that cause leaves to wilt, dry out, and die. In large numbers, squash bugs can decimate entire plants (especially younger ones), making them a major nuisance for home gardeners and commercial growers alike.
