"My wife and I attended the Home Improvement Show held at the Civic Center in Raleigh with the objective to meet replacement window dealers. To be totally honest, within an hour of arriving at the show we both felt overwhelmed from the exposure to numerous window sales people and how their window was the best. We then walked up to the Metal Works & Improvements , Inc. booth as they had windows and metal roofing (another product of interest) on display. David Logue, VP of the Company, introduced himself and utilized a low key, non pushy style to determine our interest and then provided features and benefits of the products he represented. David suggested the next step would be to arrange an appointment at our home, to fully demonstrate the Simonton Windows and take measurements to enable him to provide an estimate. We agreed to an appointment the following week. The appointment with David Logue of Metal Works & Improvements turned-out to be my second appointment of four I had scheduled with window dealers. David arrived a few minutes early for our appointment which demonstrated professionalism and a respect for my time. David's initial approach was to promote his company, his experience and the fact he is a licensed contractor in North Carolina. He took additional time to explain why it would be important for me to select a licensed contractor to perform my work whether it was with his company or not. David answered all of my questions and never tried to push anything on me. We agreed to allow him to measure my windows to enable him to work-up a quote. I received the quote by e-mail the following day. Over the next week I e-mailed David many times with all kinds of different questions. He responded to every e-mail and at one point I apologized for bothering him with so many e-mails. His response was to tell me to keep sending my questions until I had the information needed to make my decision. David never pushed me to make a decision and never used an aggressive sales tactic. My wife and I decided to purchase the windows from Metal Works & Improvements. David's crew of four installed all of our windows today. The crew arrived at the appointed time, were friendly and worked hard all day. David came by and spent a couple of hours to make certain I was happy with the job progress. The installation was prefect! After completing the job the crew leader conducted a walk-thru with me to ensure everything was too my satisfaction. They had even cleaned and vacuumed! The experience of dealing with David Logue and purchasing from his company, Metal Works & Improvements, Inc. has been a total positive experience from the first meeting to completion of the window installation today. I was so pleased I have decided to purchase vinyl siding and metal roofing from David which I will report on after those jobs are complete. Obviously, I am very pleased and can highly recommend Metal Works & Improvements, Inc. for your new windows."

"

Stuart and his crew did an excellent job remodeling my kitchen. They installed new cabinets, granite countertops, and a natural stone backsplash. The craftsmanship was excellent and I would definitely work with them again

Siding questions, answered by experts

Though vinyl siding is affordable, the material may not last as long or look as good as other siding materials. For example, wood siding has a beautiful, natural appearance but requires much more maintenance to keep your siding looking as good as new.

Fiber cement siding is another alternative that mimics the appearance of wood siding. Like vinyl siding, fiber cement is a low-maintenance material, but it does come at a higher price and is heavier and more difficult to install. Weigh the pros and cons of all siding materials before you decide on the best option for your home.

Yes, the thickness of siding is an important factor to consider when replacing it. Siding thickness helps to determine how your home retains and redirects heat. While thicker siding has a premium price, it offers greater strength and durability, stronger insulation, better wind and weather resistance, increased rigidity, and better soundproofing.

While you can perform minor siding repairs or even install it yourself over small areas, it is generally best to hire a professional siding company. Siding installation is a time-consuming and complicated process that requires specialized tools and experience. Most homeowners lack the skills to ensure proper alignment, weatherproofing, longevity, and durability, especially for more complex jobs like vertical siding. The money saved on a DIY project may not be worth the time and potential risks of improper installation.

You should plan to stain or refinish your home's cedar siding every three to seven years to maintain its appearance and provide maximum protection, though some estimates suggest a range of four to six years. The exact frequency depends on several factors, including your local climate, exposure to severe weather like direct sunlight, rain, and wind, the quality of the initial stain application, the type of stain used, and the overall condition and quality of the wood.

For homes in harsh climates with high humidity and significant sun exposure, you should plan on staining as often as every three years, while those in milder locations may only need to do so every seven years. For the longest-lasting protection in particularly harsh climates, consider using an opaque stain.

If you are looking for a lower-maintenance alternative, you might consider vinyl or aluminum siding. While the initial installation cost can be higher, they do not require as much upkeep and can offer more value over time, especially in areas with excessive rainfall or high humidity.

You should install your cedar shake siding with the rough side exposed. The smooth side is less resistant to weathering over the years, and the rough side gives your home a more rugged aesthetic. The rough side also takes to paint better and ensures any paint job will last longer before needing to be redone.
