The cost-effectiveness of fixing or replacing a door lock depends on the severity of the issue. Repairing a minor problem, such as loose screws or a need for lubrication, is usually cheaper than replacing the entire lock. However, replacing the lock if it is severely damaged, outdated, or lacks security features may be a better long-term investment. New locks often have improved security features, enhancing your property's safety.

Using a combination of tools (often store-bought plumbing tools) and brute force, a burglar can easily snap the lock on a door. Snapping a lock aims to gain access to the cylinder inside, which holds the locking mechanism. Once the thief snaps the lock, they can pick the cylinder open and walk right in.

Standard residential deadbolt locks come with a steel bolt that locks your door into place using a key (or keypad) on one side and a thumb turn on the other. When you lock it, the bolt slides into a strike plate on your door jamb to secure your door shut.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

You might want to change a door lock entry code for a handful of reasons. The most common answers are extra security or a forgotten code. You may also find yourself in a position where you need to temporarily change the code to allow a guest to come and go freely but want to switch it back once things return to normal.
