Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Because of the nature of the texture, it's common for the popcorn texture to loosen while painting. Popcorn ceilings are delicate, and using a heavy hand with a roller or applying overly wet paint can loosen the texture. To avoid a mess, handle the material gently with a roller or brush. It's also smart to test a small area first, and if the texture starts coming off, the ceiling may need repairs or sealing before painting.

The cost of application ranges from $1 to $3 per square foot, depending on the presence of asbestos and the difficulty of removal.

Soundproofing improves privacy, enhances audio quality in home theaters, and reduces external noise disturbances.

Opinions on popcorn ceilings vary. They were once famous for their acoustic properties and ability to hide imperfections. Now, they can appear visually unappealing and difficult to clean. Additionally, popcorn ceilings may contain asbestos if installed before the 1990s, posing health risks if disturbed. However, some homeowners appreciate their retro charm or find them cost-effective for noise reduction. Ultimately, whether popcorn ceilings are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and the overall aesthetic goals of the homeowner.

Yes, in most cases, it’s worth it to remove popcorn ceilings. Popcorn ceiling textures are considered outdated, making it harder to sell. Removing the texture helps give homes a modern look. Additionally, homes with popcorn ceilings that contain asbestos pose health hazards. It’s best to remove asbestos to prevent long-term side effects.
