"We had St. Augustine Sod put in our (shady, eroding, weed-filled) backyard 2 weeks ago and it looks fantastic! We were concerned that it was getting too hot for the sod to do well, but with faithful watering we haven't had any trouble with this grass taking root and staying green. Lamar and his father were so easy to work with and went above and beyond. They are very busy but always made time to call/text me back in a timely manner. I definitely recommend this company and will use them again."

"I had such a great experience with W&W Outdoors! Their customer service was truly top notch from start to finish. They were professional, responsive, and made the entire process so easy. The crew worked incredibly fast while still doing an amazing job, and everything looked perfect when they finished. It’s hard to find companies that are this reliable and efficient these days. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing tree removal or landscaping services!"

"I think they treated the wrong lawn. The note they sent me via text message referenced trees and shrubs in my yard, I have none. They also did not leave a yard marker showing they had been there. Otherwise, this would have been a 5 star review."

"Not only does Mr. Otis do fantastic work, but he is an absolutely pleasure to work with. He is a wonderful communicator and worked so graciously when I had to adjust our schedule at last minute. And the work he did was/is IMPECCABLE and SEAMLESS. If you’ve ever had any ceiling issues, you know that sometimes it is easy to spot- but his work makes the fix look like there was never an issue. I am so thrilled to have found someone I trust to help me with the revamp of my house!"

Lawns questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can absolutely make your own mulch, and there are a few ways to go about it. First, you can lay down pine needles or mulched leaves if you’re mulching in the fall. In the spring and summer, you can use mulched grass clippings. Alternatively, you can lay down a few layers of newspaper in your garden and gently wet the paper to keep it in place.

It may not be worth it to rake every leaf in your yard, but it’s necessary to remove the majority of leaves to prevent them from smothering grass growth on your lawn. However, raking leaves isn’t your only option for leaf removal. You can remove leaves easily with a leaf blower or compost or mulch them with your lawn mower to repurpose them to help grow your garden or yard.

The time it takes for leaves to decompose can range from six months to three years. Key factors influencing the decomposition rate include water, sunlight, and heat, so local weather conditions play a significant role. Decomposition will take longer for thick, matted layers of leaves. To speed up the process, you can mulch the leaves, as smaller pieces break down faster. Spreading large piles into thinner layers to increase exposure to sunlight and water also helps accelerate decomposition.

Generally, it is not necessary to remove old mulch before applying a new layer. As organic mulch breaks down, it enriches the soil with nutrients. However, you should remove the old layer if it shows signs of fungus or disease, which can be common in moist areas, or if the total depth is already too thick. Avoid letting the total mulch depth exceed 3 inches, as this can harm plant roots. If you do remove old, disease-free mulch, it can be added to a compost pile.

Tipping is not mandatory, but is a nice gesture if you are satisfied with the service your lawn professional provided. The amount you should tip depends on your area, service, and time of year. Typically, most people tip between $10 and $100 per crew member. For minor services, people tend to tip less than large jobs.
