"Just as in any project you should understand what you are getting into with the people you hire and the contract you sign. My final bill came to $11,000 which was about $7,000 over the "average" advertised by the company. in all fairness I did request additional work not included in the initial quote of $8,000 (still double the average). Once the work started the crew kept me informed on the progress and were on the job everyday until the job was complete. The only thing that remains is rebuilding the bricks that separated when the foundation was lifted. This is one of the possibilities spelled out in the contract and is my responsibility. The thing that I regret most is buying a house where Yazoo clay is evident in the first place."

"The Redeemers Group construction team was on time, pleasant, worked hard, and completed the project a day earlier than promised. The Foundation repair was well done. The encapsulation made the crawl space clean, dehumidified, and safe. We were impressed by the company's professionalism and attention to detail."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

In Columbus, expansive clay soils place heavy stress on brick pier-and-beam foundations and retaining walls, requiring frequent masonry work. High rainfall and winter freeze-thaw cycles also damage chimney stacks, brick veneer exteriors, and horizontal surfaces like walkways. Older historic homes in the area are especially vulnerable to moisture damage and require specialized lime-based mortar repairs to keep the original brick intact and safe from structural issues.

Helpful?

Combine masonry work with related projects to streamline the process. In Columbus, pair foundation repairs with grading and drainage corrections to prevent expansive clay soils from causing future damage. Coordinate chimney repairs with roof flashing replacement since both require roof access. Additionally, handle window replacements alongside exterior brick repairs, as disturbing the surrounding mortar is inevitable during the installation process.

Helpful?

Look for crumbling mortar joints, white chalky deposits on brick, or flaking brick faces to identify a need for masonry work. Stair-step cracks in your brick exterior indicate soil settlement common in MS, requiring both masonry and foundation repairs. Conversely, water stains inside or bowing walls point to roofing or structural failures. Contact a local professional to inspect significant cracks and determine the exact repair needed.

Helpful?

Spalling brick faces next to visibly newer, harder mortar joints indicate an incompatible repair. Many historic homes in MS suffer damage when modern cement is used instead of traditional lime mortar. Other warning signs include recurring white salt deposits, cracks reappearing along previously patched areas, and a hollow sound when tapping the brick. Hire a certified specialist to correct these issues and restore the structural integrity.

Helpful?

Spring and fall are the best seasons for masonry work in Columbus. Mortar requires temperatures consistently above 40 degrees to cure properly, making the freezing winter months risky. While high summer humidity slows evaporation, extreme heat still stresses fresh mortar. Local professionals prefer scheduling these projects between March and May or September and November to ensure a strong, durable finish that protects your home from the elements.
