No, you don't have to apply polyurethane to butcher block countertops. Polyurethane sealant is a long-lasting finish for a butcher block counter, but its application also requires thoroughly sanding the surface multiple times. Other materials, such as mineral oil, require less work but must be applied more frequently.

Quartz can be slightly cheaper than granite, but it depends on the grade of the material. For instance, a high-grade quartz could be more expensive than a low-grade granite. The price of granite can tick higher because it requires sealing, while quartz does not, and it’s also slightly more difficult to install, increasing labor costs.
