"The man who came to do the work was professional and did the work as directed by his supervisor who didn?t know basic electrical knowledge. He was instructed to use smaller wire and much bigger breaker than is required and not what we asked for nor what was quoted. What he installed was extremely dangerous and fire hazard particularly since it was under the house in the crawl space where a fire would go undetected till too late to save lives. The electrician who came here had to replace everything he did to our specifications turning a hour and half job into a six hour job. It doesn?t appear that the electrician in charge is an actual licensed electrician and clearly doesn?t know what he is doing. We worry about the young apprentice sent out to do the work will end up killing somebody from following instructions from his incompetent boss. "

Not all types of water heaters require a venting system. Electric tankless water heaters don’t use natural or propane gas, so no venting is required. Instead, they use electric burners to heat water quickly and efficiently. However, any system that does use gas or propane will require ventilation.

Heat pump water heaters, also known as hybrid water heaters, are the most efficient types of water heaters—both in terms of carbon emission and energy efficiency. This type of water heater utilizes as little as half of the energy of a traditional water heater while releasing no direct emissions. Tankless water heaters are also extremely efficient, although slightly less so than hybrid heaters.

A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. Water heater replacement costs around $1,300, but a total install will depend on a few factors. Solar heaters can cost upward of $3,700, while conventional gas heaters may cost less than $1,000. Tankless water heaters, common in apartments and homes without much space, cost around $2,600 to install.
