Choosing fertilizers: slow-release for steady nutrients, organic for eco-friendliness, or specific blends for soil deficiencies or grass types.

Before you put down grass seed, you should cultivate your soil or add two inches of topsoil. You should also put down fertilizer at the same time as your seed to prompt healthy growth. Be sure to water after you put down grass seed, especially for the first two weeks.

While you may see some germination by simply tossing a handful of new seeds on a lawn, you'll have more success by following the proper reseeding or overseeding process step-by-step. Ideally, you’ll want to aerate your lawn at least once per year during the growing season—think late summer to early fall.
