Small jobs welcome

"Alex from De Leon wallpaper handled the job with expertise. I bought peel and stick wallpaper and when I decided I could not handle the job I started trying to find a person to do it. My wallpaper pros and friends were not interested in the job and flatly refused to hang peel and stick wallpaper. That's when I called Angi and I am glad I did! Alex did such a professional job that I am amazed. It was perfection!!! I'm going to buy peel and stick for other rooms now that I found such a pro as Alex! Goodby gray painted walls and hello to some COLOR and Patterns again!"

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

We don’t recommend wallpapering over older paper. That’s because creating layers of glue can invite bubbling or excess moisture on the wall’s surface. You should also prime your wall before applying wallpaper and smooth the wall as much as you can, and another layer of wallpaper complicates this process.

Both paint and wallpaper can work in a bathroom, provided you choose high-quality products in either category. Washable vinyl wallpapers can stand up to bathroom humidity without peeling, as can semi-gloss or gloss paint finishes. However, if you’re someone who likes to redecorate often, paint may make it easier to change colors or designs more quickly. If you want full humidity protection and cleanability, tile or stone works better.

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

In most cases, it is not recommended to wallpaper over existing wallpaper, as the success depends on the type of paper already on the wall. While you might be able to cover non-coated wallpaper, you should never apply new wallpaper over a vinyl-coated one, which is more common. Doing so can lead to poor adhesion, resulting in bubbles, imperfections, and peeling. It can also trap moisture, potentially causing hazardous mold growth between the layers.

Even if the existing wallpaper is suitable, experts recommend applying only one new layer. Adding multiple layers (more than two total) can cause significant adhesion problems, leading to warping and bubbling. For the best results, the recommended approach is to remove the old wallpaper and all paste residue before hanging the new paper. If you are unsure about your wallpaper type, consider consulting a professional.

While peel-and-stick wallpapers require no time to cure, the adhesives for other types of papers will take a day or two to dry and up to three weeks to fully cure. The differences are the type of paper, the type of adhesive, and the humidity and temperature in the space.
