"Did an excellent job installing new guttering & gutter guards. Showed up on time and let the site free of any debris. Price was very reasonable and fair. Definitely would use them again!"

"We had John come to clean out the gutters on the back side of our house. It was a really small, insignificant project but John treated it like it was much more important than it was! What a breath of fresh air! He was prompt, professional, personable, good communicator and knew his stuff. I would recommend John in a heartbeat.....wish I could give 6 stars!"

"Hollon landscaping and Lawn Care is an excellent organization and I would highly recommend them, and have, to friends and family who are also very happy with their work. Benson and his crew took my yard that was covered with mulch(yes the whole backyard), removed the mulch, added pavers around my fire pit, paver walks to my raised gardens, steps down to my driveway and beautiful dark green grass through out the yard. All his hard work and creativity made my backyard a livable space to entertain in. Benson is honest, hardworking, and never fails to do a great job!"

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

Generally, the cost of ice dam removal is not covered by homeowners insurance because it is often considered preventable maintenance. However, the damage caused by ice dams is frequently covered. Depending on your policy, this can include interior water damage, roof collapses, and damage to shingles. Coverage for personal belongings affected by leaks may vary. It is important to check your policy details or contact your insurer to confirm what your plan covers. Keep in mind that any damage resulting from a DIY attempt to remove an ice dam will likely not be covered.

While most people associate defrosting icy roads with salt, you can also use sugar for a similar result. Sugar lowers the freezing point of water, melting ice in a pinch.

However, sugar doesn’t melt ice as well as salt because it doesn’t separate the water molecules as efficiently. So, if you need to quickly melt a stubborn patch of ice on your driveway or walkway, it’s best to use salt over sugar for faster results.

Rubbing alcohol may also remove ice from your driveway in a pinch. It has a lower freezing point than water, which expedites the unfreezing process. Pour 70 percent isopropyl alcohol into a quart or half-gallon spray bottle and spray it on your driveway. You do not have to dilute it with water.

The best way to save money on snow removal is to sign up for a seasonal contract that guarantees service throughout the entire winter. Most companies charge between $200 and $600 for this service, and they’ll often give you a break on the price if you extend annually. Of course, savings will depend on your area. If you live in a moderate climate where snowfall may or may not occur, you could pay more than you need during a light snow year. Still, it’s usually a safe bet to sign a seasonal contract.

There are several ways to remove snow from your roof: using a snow rake, salting the roof with calcium chloride, using a rope (cautiously), and using heating cables. It’s important to mention that pretty, fluffy, sparkling snow weighs a great deal, and when physically removing snow from a roof, you should be aware of large snow slabs breaking off. These can weigh hundreds of pounds and are a real danger, so be extremely careful anytime you’re doing this type of work.
