"These guys are amazing, when they say no job is too big or too small. They mean it. I had my bathroom completely redone from top to bottom, and they did such a great job I called them back to do my floors though out my home. These men are always on time. And very respectful. "Iâ ve hired Mike for many jobs. He installed the tile backsplash in my kitchen, heâ s done improvements and repairs from the builders, done custom shelving, and even hung cabinets. I highly recommend Mike. When my friends need someone I always give them Mikeâ s number. Heâ s very responsive to calls and texts. And I trust him fully to be in my home when Iâ m not there. And I never have to worry about my dogs either. He loves them and they love him!"

"I have had Barry do two projects for me, first was to install a parch and steps so my dogs could get out of the house, the second Barry poured a slab for my tornado shelter. He did quality work on both projects, his prices are reasonable. I am already planning 3 additional projects with Barry for 2018."

"Overall I was very happy with Connolly and Sons. They worked at a pretty decent pace, were courteous and punctual, and did a pretty good job at paying attention to detail and requests. Just one exception to that, where I'm going to have to fix it one way or another. Because I ended up having to go in to work, they had to hurry to finish this area, and I'm not exactly thrilled about how it came out.

"I had a few projects to tackle. A bid was given that was within my budget. I appreciated how they listened to my needs and how they made them a reality for me. I was consulted before changes, informed of any change in the original bid. Each project was completed, examined with me and approved as satisfied by me before the next project was started. All projects were completed within the agreed time frame. I was extremely pleased with the workmanship, and respect toward me and my home. I have a few more projects that are arising and will definitely be calling MELTED Home Services. Please give them consideration for your next home repairs. SF"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Penny tile should be sealed to protect the grout from moisture and keep stains from damaging the look of the tile. If penny tile is in a humid or high-traffic area, like a bathroom, kitchen, or entryway, it needs sealant. Any type of tile and grout is best maintained with a sealant reapplied by a pro every one to two years.

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

Larger tiles can be difficult to install because they’re heavier and bulkier than their smaller counterparts, which makes them harder to haul around and put in place. Plus, if you don’t install the tiles correctly, they could crack or break. For these reasons, it’s best to hire a professional for large-format tile installation.

Yes, provided you aren’t installing drywall over it. But you can skim coat it, apply new tile right on top, paint it, or stencil it. For more budget- and DIY-friendly options, you can install beadboard or apply decals. Just make sure that the current tiles are in good condition and prepped well for the paint or adhesive to stick.
