"I’ve used Greg’s for several years. The work they do is generally good, but their business practices and customer service are terrible. I put up with it in previous years, but this year was the last straw with the unnecessary work and extra charges. Most recently, they performed and charged me for more work on my riding mower than I asked for… essentially a basic tuneup, new tires, and I informed them the deck belt was coming off and asked if they could fix it. They ultimately replaced the belt and charged me over $500. When I received the mower back, it continued to pop off. When they picked up the mower again and they called saying a cover over the belt was missing and that’s why it was coming off. I said it was like that the first time they picked it up so why didn’t they inform me of it the first time? Yet they still charged me for extra pickup/delivery fees. There are plenty of other mower shops out there that are more reliable and more customer service oriented."

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

When choosing the right size generator for your needs, consider a few items to help calculate the wattage you’ll need. Start by determining which household items and appliances you want to power, and then add the wattages together. Check out the wattage of these essential appliances:

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

Running home appliances like these requires a partial or whole-house generator. A portable generator may be enough to power your home if you only plan to keep a refrigerator and freezer running. 

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window. 

When maintained properly, a whole-house generator can last up to 20 years. Costs to maintain and repair generators vary by location and type of generator, but you can expect to pay about $150 to $300 per year for annual generator maintenance checks. An experienced generator service technician will inspect your generator’s engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels to keep your generator in good working condition for as long as possible.

In many cases, you’ll need a permit or basic inspection to install one of these large generators. Since they include significant alterations to your home electrical system and many produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require jumping through a few hoops for general safety purposes. Your installer may be able to help you with these permits.
