"Mike did a great job. He did a very thorough inspection and repaired the parts of the deck that were weak. His crew only took two days to finish the job."

"Joshua from Five Star Painting came out measured and surveyed our deck, and provided a quote to bring it back to look new. On the appointed day, the crew arrived, introduced themselves, and started work. They power washed, stripped, sanded handrail surfaces sealed and stained our deck to include the overhead pergola, and swing (all cedar). When complete, the crew asked me to accompany them in reviewing the job. Upon my approval I thanked them for their meticulous work and attention to detail, and they left. A bit later, Joshua stopped by and reviewed the work again. He noticed a few spots the crew missed, and that I hadn't noticed either. He grabbed a brush and touched up those spots. I am very happy with the results. Needless to say, I am very impressed with the professionalism of Five Star Painting, and would highly recommend them. They earned their FIVE STAR name in my book. Thanks guys for a great job. We love our deck again."

Customers say: Quick response

"We hired Master Remodel & Construction after our master bathroom, kitchen and garage suffered major water damage after an interior flood caused by an overflowing toilet. Brian Inkley (owner) and Jacob Quick (project manager) have a team of dedicated, talented professionals. They did a superb job in restoring our damaged house. They are a busy team of workers who kept us appraised of their availability for the various stages of our restoration. For the repairs that they didn't do themselves they had excellent recommendations for the professionals we needed such as the carpet installation, closet system installation, kitchen cabinets and the refinishing of our hardwood floors. They seem to be in demand, working at several projects at the same time but we always felt that we were their top priority. Jacob worked with our homeowners insurance adjuster to be sure that the funds allocated for our losses were enough to complete our projects. We recommend Master Remodel & Construction with pleasure."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

The longevity of paint on wood depends on factors like the quality of the paint, surface preparation, exposure to elements, and maintenance. Exterior paint on wood surfaces can last 5 to 15 years or more with proper care and maintenance. Interior paint tends to have a longer life span, often 10 years or more. Regular cleaning, touch-ups, and addressing any issues like peeling or cracking can extend the life of the paint.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Rags used with oil-based stains are highly flammable and can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. To reduce the fire risk, throw them in a metal container after use and add rocks on top to secure them. Add an inch of water and seal the container. Take the rags in the container to a hazardous waste factory as soon as possible.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.
