"This was the easiest and most efficient project I have ever experienced. And the end result is better than I imagined. As a home owner for over 38 years, I have had a lot of disappointment with contractors, plumbers, etc. Leon has restored my faith in the process. His estimate was fair and he completed the job less than a week after we met. He explained everything he would do and the materials needed. He also contacted me as needed. The front bed looks wonderful. Leon actually listened to and respected my ideas so I now have space to dig and plant my own flowers. Digging is no longer easy for me, but Leon tilled (??) the soil so it will easy for me to dig small holes. Leon is a reliable and responsible young man. His kindness and work ethic are admirable. I highly recommend him!!"

"Harold and his crew demolished a large pool and concrete area including pool equipment. The bid included a high level of detail that other bids did not. Harold addressed my concerns about potential settling and communicated any issues that popped up such as drainage. My neighbor and I appreciated how well they fixed up the yard as the recent heavy rains made the ground soft for heavy equipment. Do give Harold a call for your project. This is an A+ company run by a kind gentlemen."

"Chad came out to inspect my property and to then fix the problem in a timely manner. He offered his opinions, explained things carefully, and communicated well throughout the whole process. I had water getting into my basement on two different sides of my house. He explained how he wanted to landscape and put in drains to keep the water from the house. I had questions after he initially came out and gave me a quote. He came back to the house so he could show me exactly where he wanted to place things and to make sure I understood. I had several quotes and felt Chad's quote was more than reasonable. Chad was very professional, friendly and patient with me. I was pleased to do business with him."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

Digging a bush up by the roots is the most natural DIY method for removing a bush stump. Start by identifying the shrub type and revealing its roots. Cut the shrub to its base and loosen the soil, ensuring no utility lines are nearby. Optionally, treat the base with herbicide, then dig around the roots and cut a circle around the shrub using various tools. Dig a trench, cut the base of the root ball, and finally fill the hole to prevent regrowth. This thorough process ensures complete removal without damaging surrounding areas.

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.
