"Cid was incredibly fast with reaching out and getting the details about our basement bathroom tile project. He had Victor out the next day to get started and the whole thing was done within a few days. Honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a contractor as far as communication and speed go. The floor tile they installed looks fantastic."

"Matt arrived on time and was efficient at replacing floor tiles. Do you think customer service is gone, well so did we until Matt Hemingway came to replace three broken tiles. He finished in 90 minutes and that included going back to hardware store for a different color grout because he didn't like the way it looked. When done you could not tell the floor had been fixed. Excellent job. Highly recommend."

"The installers did a great job installing the floors, they let me know exactly how they were going to go about the process. However, their clean-up process could be better. They left my furniture in the room as the cut and installed the floors. So there was dust all over my furniture which took me about 40 minutes to clean. At the end they didn't dust up the floor so I had to get a dust mop and get all of that up too."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.

Regardless of the material, basic square tiles will never go out of style. Neutral colors like white, grey, beige, and black will always be in demand in residential and commercial settings. Certain designs, like herringbone and hexagonal patterns, are considered timeless. Porcelain and porcelain-like tiles will also never go out of style.

The tile spacing you should use will depend on the tile and where you’re installing it. Choosing the right tile spacers to maintain a consistent gap between your tiles is tricky. Generally, tile spacing shouldn’t be less than 2 millimeters on walls and 3 millimeters on floors because of stress relief requirements. Getting it wrong can result in uneven tiles and early repairs.

It’s not a good idea to lay tile and grout on the same day. The adhesive or thin-set that sticks the tiles to the surface needs plenty of time to dry before you can grout. Wait for 24 to 48 hours, depending on moisture levels in the space. The tiles can become misaligned and more prone to damage if you don’t wait.

Popular options include ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass tiles, chosen based on the area (bathroom, kitchen) and desired aesthetic.
