American Sun Control has been serving the Mid-Missouri area and surrounding communities since 1985. The company began as American Safety and Security Film (ASSF), installing solar and security film in second homes at the Lake of the Ozarks. ASSF maintained the security film business through relationships with the FBI but as demand for window tinting increased, American Sun Control (ASC) was born. American Sun Control was the first at the Lake of the Ozarks to install window tinting film but as time went by the company began to provide other products and services to the residents of the Lake area. Karen Zaborac, awarded the 1998 Small Business Person of the Year, maintained their existing glass tinting clients and began offering fabric awnings which lead into patio covers, retractable deck awnings, deck and dock shades and party tent rentals. The growth of their business caught the attention of SCORE, Senior Corps of Retired Executives, and they awarded American Sun Control the honorable title of National Small Business of the Year in 1998. Today, American Sun Control manufactures do-it-yourself railing and supplies dealers with the DIY Railing System. The dealers sell to do it yourselfers all over Missouri. American Sun Control also continues to manufacture and install custom aluminum railing, spiral staircases, Phantom retractable screens and doors, screen enclosures, awnings, dock shades, deck shades, deck covers, patio covers, retractable awnings and glass window tinting.

Screen Repair questions, answered by experts

If your door has interchangeable inserts, you’ll likely want to swap the glass out for a screen during the summer months. The process to do so will vary by door, but you’ll follow these general steps: First, use a flathead screwdriver to pop out the retainer strips—the plastic strips running down both long (and sometimes all four) sides of the door. Then gently pull them out by hand. Carefully remove the glass insert from the door and replace it with the screen. Finally, push the plastic retainer strips back into place, working from top to bottom.

If your winter looks like heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures, taking your screens out for the season can be a great way to avoid mesh damage or bent frames. Ice can build up and put pressure on the screen, especially in older or aluminum frames. Removing them also lets in more natural light during those shorter winter days and makes it easier to keep your windows clean. In warmer climates, it’s less about protection and more about preference. Some homeowners like the clearer view while others leave them in for convenience. Either way works—it depends on your setup and what you value more.

Most windows last for 15 to 30 years, depending on the frame material and the glass quality, but most will require repairs during that time. Windows gradually lose efficiency, so it’s usually best to have a window repair technician inspect and service your windows every five to 10 years. You should also repair your windows if you experience the following:

  • Leaks

  • Drafts

  • Difficulty opening or closing

  • Sudden increases in heating and cooling bills

  • Outdoor noise becomes more audible

  • Signs of physical damage

Most window screens hold up for about 10 to 12 years—assuming they’re made from quality materials and get decent care. Fiberglass and aluminum are common, but their lifespan varies depending on how much weather they’re exposed to. Constant sun or rough winters can speed up wear and tear, while regular cleaning and basic window maintenance can help them last longer. Damage from pets or a rogue tree branch can also shorten their life. If the mesh is torn, the frame’s bent, or they’ve faded to a dull gray, it’s probably time to swap them out for something new.

Yes, adding windows adds value to a brick house. Homeowners don’t shy away from more natural light and an opportunity to get fresh air. Adding a window is particularly beneficial if you live in an area with good weather for much of the year or if your home has a nice view. Keep in mind that many older brick homes have historic wood windows that add to the charm of the house. When you install a new window in a brick house, you’ll want to find one that matches the aesthetic of the existing windows.

While windows increase a home’s value, how much they increase it can vary. It depends on the age of the home and the type of windows. You can expect about 70% to 85% return on investment (ROI) when adding a window to your home.
