No, hard water isn’t dangerous. The added calcium in hard water can contribute to good bone health. However, it can also cause dry skin and hair. If you have dry skin or hair, consider using a water-softening system to help minimize the minerals in your water. Plus, these systems can also add some sodium to your diet. 

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

Installing a water softener could help reduce calcium buildup in your pool if your pool has high calcium hardness as a result of hard drinking water in your home. Pool softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium, so if you use softened water to top off your pool, it may help keep calcium hardness from rising over time. However, it won’t lower the calcium hardness of the water already in your pool and isn’t a practical way to control pool calcium levels. The average water softener installation cost is between $200 and $6,000.

Some shower water softeners are effective, but this isn’t always the case. Most shower filters only filter out chlorine, not hard minerals like calcium. Other shower filters can't handle the demand in homes with very hard water. It's also important to change the filters on your shower filters. Failure to regularly swap out old filters will make the filter ineffective over time. 

Just as hard water can wreak havoc on your skin by drying it out, it’s also not great for your hair. That’s because hard water won’t rinse out shampoo and conditioner as effectively as soft water can. All that product buildup isn’t good news for your hair, which can look dull and limp over time with hard water.
