Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. Venetian plaster is very easy to maintain. As long as your plaster is properly sealed, you can safely wipe it down with water and mild soap to remove any scuffs or stains. And if your plaster wall cracks or chips, you can often simply patch it rather than replastering the whole wall to restore its appearance.

If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

You can technically just paint over hairline cracks in plaster since these cracks are often harmless, but this will mostly be a waste of paint. Paint will only hide the hairline crack for a few months before it shows up again. The best solution is to repair the crack with flexible filler or joint compound before repainting.

Pool plaster lasts about 10 years on average for a pool with regular use. Over time, the plaster will degrade and may chip, peel, or crack. Once your pool plaster starts showing signs of age, plan to have it replastered once the weather is right to prevent further damage.
