"Greg did an excellent job stripping, cleaning, and re-staining our deck. He was timely in his responses, cleaned up after each step, and was super friendly. Our deck looks great and is a huge improvement over our old red-stained, outdated deck. We are very happy with the color choice recommendation and finished product."

"Todd and his crew did an excellent job. Our interior had not been repainted in over 20 years, so there was a great deal of patching and prep needed. We couldn't be happier- they were meticulous, and the house looks new again. We will be using Shelton Painting again in the spring for kitchen cabinet refinishing."

"I was contacted right away after purchasing the deal with a time frame for when I could expect work to start.  Brian was on time and got a lot done very quickly for a job of this size.  Even with a high-quality paint, the job took additional coats to finally cover the dark color.  Brian cautioned me about that up front and quoted how much additional coats might cost and said they'd most likely be needed if I wanted to stay with the light color.
I appreciated the warning and it helped me budget appropriately to go with the lighter color.  The finished product looks awesome.  Prices are competitive if not on the low end for a job of this scale.  I'll definitely use Different Strokes again.

"I had them paint the front of the house and stain our deck (800 SF) this fall and plan to hire them to paint the rest of the house next Spring. They responded quickly to my request for a bid. The bid was competitive and transparent. They got the work done in the time period we discussed. They did nice work and cleaned up each day. My only comment is the work van does not inspire confidence but the owners are frugal and conscientious. :0)))."

"Contractor did complete the job but there were problems. Deck failed first inspection because it did not comply with local building code for hand rails and post. Sub-optimal communication between contractor owner, contractor agent and customer. Follow-up regarding initial inspection not good. Lots of finger pointing between contractor, local inspector, city permitting department, and customer. Not satisfied with contractor owners negative attitude directed towards customer. A thorough and comprehensive review of local building requirements for decks prior to the start of the project would have prevented all of these problems. The city publishes exactly what the requirements are. I've experienced better. Did not check for water around the patio door and they missed that too, they got away with several unfinished parts."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Hangers are one way of attaching stair stringers to a deck. These metal hangers are usually adjustable, allowing you to find the ideal angle for a secure installation. They’re the best choice for installing longer staircases, such as one on a two-story deck, to reduce the load on the deck frame while keeping the stairs stable.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.

Essential tools include brushes or rollers, drop cloths, sandpaper or power sanders, and appropriate cleaning supplies. Quality materials ensure long-lasting results.
