Residential electrician with 10 years experience in all things residential. I can tackle any electrical project in the home, and I have a passion for electrification and new technologies. I would love to chat about EV's, battery systems, efficiency, and electrification in general!

"I hired Peder Power to install a new outlet and run low voltage wires for a doorbell. He provided a few options and the pricing was up front. They were timely, courteous, and the installation was flawless. I would fully recommend them!"

We are a full service electrical contractor, commercial, residential, remodels, service upgrades, hot tub/ spas, swimming pools. We do do sub contracting, experience in the cell phone industry( +24v -48 v systems) shelter services, equipment installs, battery removal or swap outs of battery stacks.

"I typically don’t write reviews, but after the service we received from Rayco, I felt the need to share. If you are looking to hire an experienced electrician look no further! I would hire this company 100 times over! The service from start to finish was top notch! The gentleman, Ray, that we worked with was so honest, even telling us where we could save money and provided ideas. We had him do our entire house with recessed lighting, put new lighting in bathrooms, add outlets to our entire unfinished basement, the list goes on. He was so respectful and scheduled times were met, and were invoiced the same as what we were quoted - no surprises. On top of his professionalism, the work he did was outstanding to say the least! Thank you Rayco for the outstanding service from start to finish and for making everything we wanted happen beautifully."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

When properly maintained, natural gas generators can last a long time, as much as 20 to 40 years. They have relatively few needs compared to generators with other fuel types. However, the generator’s lifespan ultimately depends on how often the generator is used and for how long it’s left running.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.
