Small jobs welcome

"Josh did an excellent job of fixing some wiring problems we had. I was contacted quickly and the repair work was completed the next day. I am very satisfied with Meyer Electric and would highly recommend them for electrical work that needs to be done. Also, I found their repair costs to be very reasonable. I will definitely contact them for future electrical work."

"Starlight Electric did a fantastic job on the electric part of my current home improvement project, and even better they did it for an affordable price. They took the time to explain what they were doing and spent the extra effort to make sure even the little things were done right. We will be hiring Starlight Electric for all our electrical needs."

"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"We recently had the entire house rewired, as our old wiring was from the 1930's. This was a challenging project, but Kory from Halle Electric was incredibly proficient. He managed to pull new wiring through our tongs-and-grove walls and ceilings without the need for excessive drilling or cutting. I highly recommend Halle Electric and look forward to working with them again for any future electrical projects. Kory truly delivered excellent service at a price we could afford. 5 Stars..."

"It was okay. Once I called him, he came quickly. There were additional charges. He broke up the wall and that never got fixed. He did the electrical stuff. He did what I wanted him to do. They were just average. They adequately did what I wanted them to do. He broke the wall and I didn't like that. He didn't even say anything. He came right away when I called him."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

While washers and dryers do not require a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet to function properly, electrical codes often mandate their use for safety. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires GFCI protection for all outlets within six feet of a water source. This means a washer and dryer must be plugged into a GFCI outlet if they are installed in locations like a laundry room, utility room, garage, or basement. In other areas without a nearby water source, there is no specific requirement, but using a GFCI outlet is still recommended for extra peace of mind. It is always best to consult your local codes and regulations to ensure compliance and safety.

The Occupational Safety and Home Administration (OSHA) requires an electrical panel to have a minimum of three feet (36 inches) of room from the front of the panel to the closest obstacle. In this case, the word obstacle refers to nearly everything, including walls, machines, and other fixed objects. Additionally, panels require at least 6½ feet of headroom in the area directly in front of the fixture. These requirements help ensure safe use of the panel and allow electricians plenty of room to work.

Smart light switches are designed to work with most traditional light fixtures and wiring. However, there are several compatibility factors to consider. Some smart switches require a neutral wire to function, which may not be present in older homes (typically built before 1985). If you plan to use a dimming feature, ensure your LED bulbs are specifically the dimmable type. Additionally, a stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for remote control, though some models may use other standards like ZigBee, which would require a compatible smart home hub.

GFCI outlets generally need to be replaced every 7 to 15 years, though some may fail in as little as 5 years, depending on usage. It is important to test them regularly. Signs that a GFCI outlet is failing or has reached the end of its lifespan include: no power coming from the outlet, the outlet not resetting when the 'reset' button is pressed, or the outlet not tripping when the 'test' button is pressed. If you notice any of these issues, it is time to replace the outlet, and it's best to contact an electrician to do so.

It depends on where you live. Some cities may require a permit for electrical work, while others don’t. You’ll need to call your city’s building department to determine if you’ll need to apply for a permit or not. If a permit is required, you’ll likely have to pay a fee for it.
