"We had a humidifier installed. They installed it quickly and professionally. The installer Jimmy was very helpful and even gave me a couple pointers in regards to installing a wifi thermostat. I've always had great experiences with Kath/Aquarius home services and will definitely use them again."

"I needed a EZ Generator switch installed at the furnace to connect a solar generator, it required a floating neutral, not a common request, they made it happen plus a safety upgrade. Now I can use my Jackery 4k system to keep the heat on and additional appliances in a power outage. This is way more convenient than hauling wood or messing with gas plus a energy tax credit is an incentive."

"Chris did an outstanding job on my EV charger installation project! His customer service was exceptional, providing very timely responses to emails and text messages, often within minutes. He did a great job coordinating with my electric company to ensure everything was setup properly for the Energy Wise program I was enrolling in and worked to acquire the necessary permits and coordinate inspection. Highly recommended!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.

Homeowners can often access federal tax credits, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers a percentage of installation costs. Many states and utilities offer additional rebates, grants, or performance-based incentives. These programs can significantly lower your upfront investment. Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) or contact your local energy office for current offers.

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.
