"Janine came out last fall and gave us a bid on removing our old gutters prior to construction and also for installing new gutters and covers upon completion of the remodeling. She was very punctual in getting an estimate out to us. We needed to start construction sooner than their schedule would allow them to remove the old gutters, so we had another company take them down. We did like the bid we received from Janine, as well as the design of the Leafree gutter covers, so we decided to go with Cravin Bros. to install the new ones. They were very flexible in terms of the installation date, since we had no idea when our construction would be completed, and they were willing to hold the price that they quoted us. Installation went very smoothly, and Craig had good ideas when it came to downspout placement. Nice job."

"The rock installation in my flower bed and around my trees looks excellent! They cleaned up the mulch, removed the overgrown grass, and installed edging for the rock. Great job!"

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

Removing snow from your roof can help prevent ice dams, but the best thing to do is address insulation issues in your attic. If you do decide to remove the snow manually, you should always use a roof rake rather than a shovel. You shouldn’t climb your snowy roof in any circumstance, and roof rake allows you to remove the snow from the ground or a ladder. For the best results, remove snow as soon as possible after it falls.

When starting the engine, you typically leave the choke on a snowblower in the "choke" or "closed" position. After starting, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Then, gradually open the choke, moving it to the "open" or "run" position, allowing more air into the engine and transitioning to a normal fuel-air mixture. The exact duration varies based on the snowblower model and ambient temperature, but as a general rule, you should open the choke once the engine has stabilized and runs smoothly, typically within a few minutes.

Some commercial services use sand when clearing ice, but that’s to add instant traction, not to melt the ice. While you can scatter kitty litter, sand, or similar substances on steps, paths, or porches to improve safety during icy conditions, they won’t help melt hardened ice. Rely on salt or other de-icing methods to fully melt away stubborn ice.

If a big freeze catches you by surprise and you don’t have any deicer to hand, you can reduce the chance of taking a tumble by laying gritty, anti-slip materials. Some natural, readily-available options that don’t melt ice but offer traction underfoot include sand, wood shavings, kitty litter, and fireplace ash.

While most people associate defrosting icy roads with salt, you can also use sugar for a similar result. Sugar lowers the freezing point of water, melting ice in a pinch.

However, sugar doesn’t melt ice as well as salt because it doesn’t separate the water molecules as efficiently. So, if you need to quickly melt a stubborn patch of ice on your driveway or walkway, it’s best to use salt over sugar for faster results.
