"Our home has unique textured finishes on the walls and ceilings. We sustained some water damage and had to replace a large section of the kitchen ceiling. We also had several ceiling and wall cracks that needed to be repaired. Garth did all of the plaster work and it matched the existing ceilings and walls perfectly. He also did a new rough plaster finish on our breezeway ceiling to match the adjoining office. He is very talented at what he does, and his pricing was very fair. My contractor warned me that I might not find someone who could do this type of plaster work these days. I was glad that I found Garth and proved him wrong. I recommend Garth without reservation. His work is beautiful."

"Brigham and his crew did an amazing job of removing the popcorn ceiling on the first floor of our home. It looks great. We had interviewed 3 companies about the job and Twin City Drywall was the best quote and very prompt in returning calls and answering questions. I would strongly recommend them."

"Erick and his team were so great! He was able to come out right away to take a look at the project, and kept us in the loop throughout the process. We had Erick and his team, seal, sand, skim coat and paint the ceilings in our entire house (8 rooms in total), and each room turned out beyond amazing. They even sealed a couple of spots multiple times (with no added cost) to ensure we wouldn't have any bleed through, which was very appreciated. I would highly, highly recommend Erick!"

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

The cost to repair a ceiling after a water leak can vary, with averages ranging from $419 to $1,359, or $45 to $55 per square foot. Smaller patches may cost around $150. The final price depends on the size of the affected area and the extent of the damage. Remember that you will also need to repair the source of the leak, such as roof damage or a plumbing issue, which can cost an additional $200 to $1,550. Depending on the situation, you might also face costs for repainting or repairing floors. For an accurate estimate, it is best to get a quote from a professional.

Priming a popcorn ceiling before painting is a good idea, especially if the ceiling is stained, discolored, or has never been painted. Interior paint primer helps seal the surface, preventing stains from bleeding through and allowing the paint to adhere better. Use a stain-blocking, water-based primer for best results.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. The primary drawbacks include an outdated appearance, difficulty with cleaning and maintenance, and potential health risks, as ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos. As design trends have shifted toward sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now prefer smooth ceilings for their clean look and easier upkeep. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections. Some also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective solution. Ultimately, whether they are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and aesthetic goals.
